Totally disgusting!  We try to pick it up right away, but we aren't always able.  Why why why would they want to eat their poo?

So gross.  I think it's the only thing more disgusting than when my dogs eat the cat poop.  Ugh.  I can't even think about it.  As far as I know, there's no consensus as to why dogs do this.

I read in one of the many, many dog books I have that if you feed your dog pineapple, they can't stand the smell in their poop and won't eat it.

I've also read that part of the problem is if they are eating food that isn't highly digestible, so there is too much undigested food in the poop and they'll eat it because of that.

I will be interested to hear from others what they know.  My dogs don't do this (knock on wood!!!) and I'll freak out if they start.

If anyone has answers I would LOVE to hear them....IF something works! Bella started doing this -NOT as a puppy but at the ripe old age of four years. UCK & double UCK! We have changed her food, tried the pineapple, covered her poop with pepper & chillie powder, given her a med from the vet.....Nothing works. She doesn't seem the least bit interested in anyone else's... Just hers and only if it's fresh! What's with that? I'll also be waiting to hear if anyone has the magic answer.

There was a recent article posted about that by a Vet named Dr. Becker...her articles and videos are somehow related to Dr. Mercola's. I don't have the site off hand, but you could Google it.  I have to say that my views are not always in alignment with theirs, but I have often picked up useful information from both practitioners. (Dr. Becker is the Vet. and Dr. Mercola works with people!)

Thank you - I will check it out

Teddy did this when we first got him. He stays in a pen while we are at work, and before he could hold it all day, he had puppy pads in there. We think he ate it to clean up after himself. We had to get a prescription for Forbid from the vet and that made it taste bad, so he didn't eat it for awhile, and then tried it again and we had to give the Forbid again. Shortly after the second time, when he was 4 months, he learned to hold it all day and there hasn't been a problem since then. If he sniffs other dog's poo on a walk I say "LEAVE IT" and he knows not to pick it up.

The Vet I was referring to is Dr. Karen Becker...I was blanking on her first name when I wrote you before. Like I said, I have not agreed with her 100% of the time, but I usually go away from her articles and videos with a bit more insight.
