Wally had a visit to the vet today. Unfortunately we got not great news; he has at least one cataract. Anyone have an experience with cataracts? Also he has an allergic reaction on his genital area that has gotten infected. The doctor didnt seem worried about the cause of it (Im thinking allergy to food, environment etc) Anyone have this either? (I mean their dog!!)

Cataracts! But he's so young? Have you talked to your breeder yet? That would be the first person I would contact. I honestly have no other advice about that. I'm so sorry.

Regarding the genital area, BB and many other puppies here seem to be prone to little white heads in that area. Almost rash-like. I have heard of this becoming infected, but we never had that issue. I guess that is just a very sensitive area on the little guys, and at least BB had a lot of the skin exposed as his hair is very thin down there. He grew out of it by about 5 months I would say.  Food allergies are much more rare than people believe, but the food group would be much more knowledgeable and happy to share info regarding that... Best of luck, sorry to hear the bad news...

I think you should definitely contact your breeder immediately.  Do you have a health guarantee?  Do you have pet insurance?  I had a dog with cataracts but the first one developed at six years and the second a couple of years later. Unfortunately all those years ago there were no operations possible so she was completely blind from the age of six.  Rosie was 17 years old when she finally passed on.  I do know that there are vet eye specialists and I would be looking for a referral as soon as possible.  As for the rash it is most unlikely to be anything food related and more likely to be something topical that caused it.  I am sure there are others with lots more information and advice for you.  I would also post in the Health and Medical matters group or on the main page.

Chester had a rash in the genital area- caused by not drying the area thoroughly enough after a swim.

it is a warm moist area susceptible to infection- although his spots weren't brown..more 'pimple looking'

No experience with cataracts.. but you should check out the medical group.

That is sad- hope wally can be back to himself soon.
