I'm looking for advice from those with younger dogs. We are considering adding a doodle to our family. Kids are 2.5, 9 and 11. The youngest is allergic to dog saliva. Only saliva. Doesn't have other symptoms. We have explored numerous dogs. Today she interacted with a doodle. Doodle licked her eye. It got red, itchy and watery. We gave her some Zyrtec and it resolved. We visited for about 90 minutes all together. She pet the dog, crawled on the floor.
Of course with a puppy or any dog really this age child would never be left unattended. Even with our old dog I had concerns baby might hurt the dog. Is it unreasonable to think we can keep a puppy away from a toddlers face?
It's been 13 years since I did the puppy thing. We never had issues with our older dog.

I'm sorry you are going through all these complications.

You probably already know/suspect this, but I think there are many things we don't understand about our immune system.

As an adult, I had allergies (hives) to some things that I wore, and they would cause hives for about 2-5 years, then subside for a few years, then return for a few years, repeat.  So it wasn't always predictable.

As I'm sure you know, some people get worse allergies as they are exposed more.  Other people 'outgrow' of their allergies.

So you can't always predict what your child's reaction will be in the future.

Thank you. These are good points. I keep envisioning having to wait until she goes to college to get a new dog. She could change. My husband has a background in immunology and says the same thing. He also thinks she can live with a dog though.
I still wonder if this response to dog saliva is linked to the initial dog and the nuts. That is done weird immune response.
She tests negative for cats and the other 4 of us are all very allergic. The allergist said it was only a matter of time and she would be too.
We've had a not so great last few months. Dealing with the peanut kid and her trips to the ER. I never thought I would desire another dog but here I am making myself crazy trying to figure out if we can make it work.
I wanted to thank all those here who provided thoughtful responses. I thought you may be interested in how we made out
We brought pup home 2/14/16. I was a bit neurotic at first with baby girl and puppy interacting. Lots of rules. Hand washing, aquaphor as a barrier. Baby girl may of had a couple hives the first few months with copious saliva.
Pup has been relatively easy to train. Still a little mouthy.
As it turned out, I'm a bit more allergic than I realized. I can't bath or brush pup. I get contact hives.
Fortunately, he and baby girl get along just great. He has been a beautiful addition to our family. So happy we took the plunge against medical advice. Pup has just brought so much joy to our home!

Thank you for updating. I am glad you are thrilled with your gorgeous doodle and all is going better than expected. Love your photo!

Glad it all worked out. Beautiful doodle. I have seasonal allergies but have never been allergic to dogs or cats. My grand daughter brought home the class guinea pig for the summer. I found out I am allergic to those. This one really sheds. My kids had hamsters growing up, those didn't seem to bother me. Glad it is not my house and it's only temporary.
