Since Charlie is only 9 weeks, I can't take him for walks outside yet or do much with him unless we are in the backyard where it's safe from other dogs. I'm feeling stuck in terms of what to do to keep him busy. When we go outside in the backyard, sometimes he'll enjoy playing with his ball but other times it's like he has more interest in nipping at my ankles and feet then his toys.

I don't want to bring him in the basement yet Ito play because he's still getting the hang of going out in the backyard to do his "business" and I don't want to confuse him by bringing him down there where he won't see the patio door.

I try to do some tricks with him and train him to keep him focused but his attention span is short and he gets distracted after a couple minutes.

I don't know what else to do with him to take out his energy. He seems to like playing indoors .. But I need to buy him new toys? What kind of things did you guys do with your puppy to release his energy?

You are most welcome! It really is such a Catch-22. Trying to keep our little guys safe and at the same time getting the ultimate socialization. But not only can it be done, but it can be fun too. And along the way, you meet some of the nicest people!
I got my 9 week old Gracie on Friday. Your suggestions are great. My situation is even more limiting as I live in the 2nd fl in a condo. There's a well used dog path that I dare not use. I think I'll take her over to the Pearl St Mall (in Boulder) tomorrow while I have my coffee. I took her for a car ride today, but she got carsick. I have a grass patch on my balcony. I'm taking her every 15 minutes. If she is successful using the grass, I follow it up with a treat and go inside to play fetch.

I tried to crate her last night, but she cried and barked so loudly that I was afraid it would wake the neighbors. What do you apartment dwellers do? Help and thanks,
Marilyn and Gracie.

I fully respect our vet and her opinion, but everyone may not agree. She said we needed to be cautious and not deliberately put Archie in harm's way, but she said we couldn't keep him in a bubble, either. We were told we could walk him up and down our street, provided we could be confident that neighbors' dogs were well taken care of and up to date with their shots. I walked him in short spurts to help him with loose-leash walking. I was careful, but his feet did touch the ground and he's just fine. : )

We also have kids, so just their energy level kept the puppy busy during times of confinement.

Good luck. Hope the next few weeks zoom by!
