Can anyone recommend a doodle proof garbage can? We currently have a stainless steel that you push foot level to open it. Clara cleverly uses her paw and gets right in.

We use a smaller can and keep it in the pantry behind a closed door. I've also read that some people put child locks on their cans. Clara sounds like a very smart girl!

Oh those clever, clever doodles. Gotta love 'em!

I've been using locking trash cans by Simplehuman for a long time now because of my own clever, clever doodles. They're not the most attractive things but I don't have a good place to hide a kitchen trash so I have to have a locking lid with these guys. Simplehuman makes several much more attractive designs, including one with a "butterfly" folding lid that is said to be just as dog-proof, but they're way out of my budget right now.

This can fits the Costco kitchen garbage bags perfectly, as well as being just the right size to hold a 30 pound bag of kibble, and the lock is stiff enough that the boyz don't even bother trying while not being so stiff that I can't pop it open or shut with one hand.

Should mention that you might be able to find them locally - I know that Bed, Bath, and Beyond and Home Depot both carry a few Simplehuman products - and Amazon has most of them, usually Prime-eligible and often at a better price.

(Huh. This is somehow automatically creating links in that last paragraph and I don't seem to be able to remove them. How very odd.)

Sounds like a locked down pail is needed for your too smart doodle!

We are lucky to have a pull out drawer for our garbage cans-his nose is always right there when it gets opened.  Same with his food stored in the pantry behind doors and in a pull out shelf-he is there is a heart beat when it gets opened, but fortunately can't open it himself!

I looked all of these for my daughter who was having your same problem. Thankfully, we have a drawer with 2 cans...one for trash and one for garbGe. Keeps prying Doodle noses out!

These do get pricy tho :(

I have my can built into the cupboard. I made it myself years ago when my labs would take the cans and knock them down the steps so they would break open.

I took a space that once held the dishwasher, added a door, and place the cans inside.

Love dogs. They will do anything to get to the trash. Your dog sounds awesome. Pain in the arse, but awesome  :)

I had one lab who could open the refrigerator.  What a nightmare.  I had to padlock the fridge. Seriously.  I lost thousands of dollars in food when he was alive.

*how* in the heck did your dog open the fridge??

We had a cat that opened the fridge, turned on the kitchen tap and opened the freezer...we lost thousands of dollars worth of food and had to get rid of the freezer entirely. He lived until he was 18 and we loved him dearly though admiring his astonishing brain :)

Aren't animals amazing? We have a Ragdoll cat now, who has learned to turn on the bathtub tap. It is tied shut. She will also "tap" my kitchen faucet to turn it on. I have to make sure the touch feature is off or else! She also pees on the toilet if the lid is left open! It took me awhile to figure who in the house was not flushing! I got the ole " not me" from my husband and son, when he was here. God help us if she learns to open the fridge! ;)
Hmmm, our cat just drinks from the toilet! Peeing would be better. :-)
LOL...you're right! I should count my blessings! ;)
How does a cat open a refrigerator? Inquiring minds want to know! But DON'T tell my cats!

We have a motion activated garbage can lid - there's nothing to grip from the outside so it would be hard to get a paw in there.  I think ours is made by "Simple Human"
