my puppy is coming in 2 more weeks!  We'll pik him up at 9 weeks and take him straight to my mom's house where we will be on vacation.  she has beautiful hard wood floors.  I wondered if I could put down a plastic sheet on the floor under the puppy's ex-pen to preserve her floors?  has anyone else tried this?

Please don't use plastic.  The puppy could eat this out of curiosity and choke or it could cause other bad issues such as blockages in the bowels.  If you are truly worried see about getting a carpet remnent or vinyl flooring remnant that is larger than the x-pen...please don't use a plastic sheet!  Puppies chew through everything!
You can get a roll of linoleum at a store like Loews for about $30--it is a great thing to put under an X-pen. I use it when my puppy litters are 4 weeks old and moving into the X-pen from the whelping box--works well. Some people use indoor/outdoor carpet--not sure how you would keep that clean!
Definitely don't use the plastic.  I can all but guarantee your puppy will spend all his time trying to tear at and eat the plastic, which is very dangerous.
I've used a strip of table protector on our floorboards , it's thick rubber waterproof one side- the other side felt.
My puppy is 12 weeks old and doesn't chew it. Although she rips up the newspaper. She was paper trained when I got her and I've placed the newspaper on the table protector.
