I'm curious because I lift Charlie up under the armpits, the way I would pick up a chid...but sometimes when I do this he cries! Is that a tender spot for them?

When you think about it it is hard to describe. I always pick a dog up from the side - my left  hand scoops under tummy just behind the front legs and the other hand supports the butt and opposite side leg.  I think picking them up like a child might not support them enough and might put the front legs in an awkward position.

Sorry Nikki, I didn't mean to offend you. There are actually plenty of videos on YouTube showing how to correctly lift a dog. It's way better than trying to describe it or picture from someone's description. It's totally a visual thing.
I've been trying to get back to this discussion to tell you that I didn't mean to offend you, Nikki. I'm having problems with the DKSite. Hope it goes through this time. I just wanted to say that I really mean that it's a visual thing that's hard to put into words without pictures. There actually ARE videos on YouTube showing how to pick up a dog... Several of them. I just should have taken the time earlier today to say all that. Sorry.
