OK, I looked through the first 14 pages of Puppy Madness discussions and searched but did not find a discussion on this. I probably missed it, so sorry if it has already been discussed!!
I am wanting to know what kind of food you feed and how long does a bag last you (average) for a new puppy (8-16 weeks)?
I am trying to decide what kind of food to feed my Doodle (which I will pick up on Friday yay!!). The last time I had puppies I raised them on Pedigree puppy the adult for pretty much their whole lives. Now I am hip to the higher end foods and since I will only have 1 puppy (+ 2 small dogs) I can afford to get something a little more suited to my dog's diet needs. I am *thinking* about keeping him on Orijen (the breeder is feeding him this now). But just in case this food doesn't agree with him, I might have to try something else. And even though the foods cost more I know that you don't have to feed as much due to lack of fillers.
I feed Orijen puppy, and it has worked out great with Murphy (13 wks). He loves it, and it agrees with him. I would just follow the directions on the package for how much to feed based on your puppy's weight and size. I feed about 2 - 2.5 cups per day. It is one of the best foods on the market, and where your puppy is already used to it I see no reason to try something different right now.
I feed my 12 months doodle Orijen, Innova EVO, Solid Gold, Wellness. Right now he's on Innova EVO Red Meat and he loves it.
This is a good website that you might like to take a look before you get your doodle food, they review and rate most of dog food out there: http://www.dogfoodanalysis.com/dog_food_reviews/
I feed my Mochi 2 cups a day plus meat, a 15lb bag usually last him a month.
Joyce, I am familiar with that link already :) Thanks! The 15 lb bag at the 1 place I can purchase Orijen is $37. I feel this is reasonable for me at this time.
Jane, I don't usually follow the recommendations on the bag for feeding, as it is sometimes WAY too much. Instead I let the dog's weight and hunger tell me. For instance, with my last two large dogs (97 lbs and 63 lbs) the recommended cups per day was something like 6 c per day!!! On 2 cups per day (2.5 for the 97 lbs) they maintained their ideal weight. Obviously with a puppy who is growing they will require the appropriate amount for development, so I start with the bag recs (as you suggested), then adjust from there.
Really what I was curious about was comparing the higher end foods to any commercial diets people might be feeding, and seeing what the differences are in how long a bag lasts....did that make any sense???? My brain feels a little foggy, it is a Monday after all :)
check out the food group! It's full of useful dog food information. There are some real food gurus in that group that would be more than happy to send you in the right direction.
My Chewie started out on Wellness and when he was 4-5 months switched to Fromm's. He loves it and does very well on it. It is an all life stages food. A lot of our DK members use it and are very happy with it. Their 4-Star line are single protein foods...I believe there are 5 or 6 varieties and you can switch between them with little or no transition.
Peri and Chewie both eat Fromm and are about the same age (11-12 months) and weight (mid-20s)- so I am betting we go through about the same amount monthly.
A 15 pound bag lasts Peri about 40 days. And I can buy it for about $24/bag here in Nashville. Peri and Chewie are both minis.
Good news! The place where I went to get a bag of Orijen carries Fromm! They just weren't listed as a retailer on Fromm's site. So I got a bag of the Puppy Gold, to start with as a transition out of the Orijen. I just feel that the protein content is too high in the Orijen for a puppy, just my opinion. But the adult food looks great. I do like that Fromm is a tad cheaper, though :) And, I think I will be switching everyone else over to Fromm, except my dog Bennie (congestive heart failure, he requires low sodium diet and Fromm does not make this).
Yes good luck with the Fromm! Many of us on DK (especially Food Group members) use Fromm. The doods seem to like the flavors. And Minga, keep in mind that as your pup gets older, you can rotate between all the different Fromm flavors. One month Peri gets pork & applesauce, the next she gets the Adult Gold formula, the next she gets duck. Peri has been on the 4-star nutritionals pretty much since day one, but she is a mini and minis are okay on the all-life stages food (which 4-star Fromm is). You should stick with Puppy for your standard (I think you are getting a standard??).
