It sounds like Racey got lice from doggy day care.

She's been itching like crazy and I've noticed tufts of hair around the house. Normally we have dust bunnies of hair in the corners, but not tufts in the middle of the floor.

Ugh-I guess I'll buzz her down tonight and start applying the revolution.

Any one have this experience? And any suggestions or guidance?

Oh NO!  So sorry to hear that!  I don't know anything about DOGGIE lice, but sure know a lot about people lice - being a teacher.  I didn't know dogs could get lice!  UGH!  Can you get it from her?  Good luck!

Kort - Sorry you are having to deal with this issue.  You might check this website out online.  It give you specific steps to follow.

Linda, that link isn't working for me-it says 404 not found.

Just wanted to say that we went through this in the winter. I noticed it while giving bailey a bath. We went to the vet and got a treatment which I applied twice and then each night I spent some time picking each individual louse out instead of shaving her! She had them mostly on neck/ears/head. It was gone in about 2 months.

Our friends dog got it and they used the shampoo 3x a week (they may have over did it), but it was gone much quicker, just within a couple weeks.

Wash all bedding and toys in steaming hot water, and vaccumm everywhere!!! they can re-infect so easily, so take precautions. I kept the toys away from her for an extra week just to be sure as dog lice only live 3-5 days on an object without re-attaching to a dog.

Good luck!

Chelsea,

I cut Racey's hair on Friday night. I scissor cut her, then used the 1/16th inch buzzer, which means her hair is about 1/2 inch long.. I didn't find any lice on her-lots of dandruff though. Then I gave her a bath. After the bath, the dandruff was gone. Gave her the treatment. Washed all the bedding in the house. All her toys had been outside in the snow, so I wasn't too worried about them. I don't think lice can live in snow. Vacuumed the whole house. We were an exciting family on friday night-let me tell you.

I'm not sure that she really had lice since I couldn't find any on her. It's going around Anchorage now and she had been itching like crazy which is why I thought she had it. But since I couldn't find any lice?? You'd think I'd at least have found one while cutting her hair and bathing her right?

I would suggest taking her into your vet for a quick check.  They will scrape her skin in several places and put it under the microscope and can tell whether it is in fact lice.  Sometimes it is difficult to tell with the naked eye.  I would rather know that she has it in actuality before treating if not necessary. Good luck.

doggy day care is making everyone apply the revolution anyway.
