Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

I've read through many older posts. My Basset Hound is on Trifexis, but I noted to my vet that this is not ideal for Goldendoodles. She gave me Heartguard but I wanted to check in and find the optimum topical flea control. Much appreciated.

Just curious...why is Trifexis not ideal? Our vet recommended it for our 4 mo. old labradoodle and it seems to be working okay.

I've read it's not best for dogs that are prone to seizures. I think poodles are more prone to them, as well as white dogs. But that's just the little I've learned in my abundance of reading. I'm sure others can give more thorough answers.

I'm following this for advice too.

Our breeder used advantage multi on the pup before we picked up on saturday (which covers heartworm and adult fleas). I asked our vet about what is best to use yesterday since I don't want to use a topical as we have children and it concerns me that they could get it on them. She gave me a few pamphlets and said she only recommends oral.

It's all a bit confusing with so many opinions on what is best for golden doodles and the long term effects on them vs. making sure I do what I can to protect my family from over exposure to pesticides etc.

Our breeder noted this in the binder of information about Oliver. I am researching but the Internet is the "Wild West" of conspiracy theory. My vet said she hadn't had any untoward effects from dogs on this med but if I was uneasy recommended Heartguard. My Basset has been on Trifexis for years and just gets a bit of loose stool.
Here is an article that I just read. http://web-dvm.net/unsubstantiated-mass-hysteria-targets-trifexis/
My husband is a physician and deals with drug questions all the time, it's a natural instinct to make sure we first do no harm. There are anecdotal and scientific studies.

I read it.. and a good bit of the comments too. I think it is difficult to pick any medication to administer, even to ourselves. It's just annoying when vets seem to push one product more than another. And, even if they have your pet's wellness in mind, they are psychologically biased when they have money on the table (the sales perks and free lunches where they "learn"). I don't think being skeptical makes anyone a conspiracy theorist, nor do I think all vets are in it for the money. I just think they should acknowledge the fact that there is a bias there and it's real. It's the same reason judges can't take money or gifts from attorneys.... bias. It is impossible to control your own bias, even when you know it exists. Rant over. lol. It is an interesting article but just as one sided as the other side....

We use Heartguard on all three of our poodle-mix dogs.

We tried Trifexis with Melody and Morgan, but they would not take it, no matter how we tried to give it to them.  We have gone back to topical Advantage Multi, and it is tolerated well.  We get our prescription through Doctors Foster and Smith, ordered by our Vet.  He no longer carries it in his office, as so many prefer Trifexis. It covers Heartworm, Fleas, Hookworm, Whipworm, Roundworm, Microfilaria, and Sarcooptic Mange.
