Lucky is 6 months old (50 pounds) and always seem to have a bottomless pit for a stomach. We had been feeding him Nutro's chicken based food . We had been feeding him 3 cups, but according to the package and him always feeling hungry, we increased him to 4 cups a day (1 1/2 in the AM, 1/2 -1 at lunch, and 1 1/2 cups at dinner). The vet has checked his stool and everything is normal.
We finally changed him to a higher meat content food--Great Life--and has been giving him 3- 3 1/2 cups a day. But, he continues to jump on counter tops, dinner tables, etc. scavenging for food (despite multiple attempts to correct his behavior).
OMG! I have been feeding Fozzy Bear, 9 weeks, Nutro Ultra. The package says something like 1-1/2 to 2-1/2 cups per day. So I have been feeding him 2-1/2 cups and you would swear I was starving him! I don't know if it is normal or not.
Our vet told us to let Taffy eat as much as she wanted and after 15min. pick it up. We started to have troubles with her stools. We have eventually cleared up the stools and they are finally solid but we do feed her according to the bag. She always looks for more but after about 10min. she realizes she isn't getting anything else she calms down. We also still feed her 3x a day and this helps. She is 5 months old.
Scavenging for food, wanting extra fun treats, begging for food, lusting after people food---all of this is very normal dog behavior. Just like people crave food and see something delicious and want it--dogs are even more that way. I think it's pretty much wired in their genes to go out and seek food and eat things that taste good to them any chance they get. However since it's normal dog behavior, but not good behavior in the house, the best thing is to make sure that your counters are clear of food and manage the situation to allow your dog to be good. If temptation is there most dogs are gonna go for it!
