No Pull Harness

Winston is 10.5 months old and 24 lbs. He is  a fabulous dog, who we all love to death,  but he's strong and even with lots of training and two walks a day he would still pull when he wants to go see something bad enough.

It is very hard on my lower back and had meant I had begun to relent all his walks to other members of the family, which made me sad because I love to walk and want to take him with me, but I don't want to be in agony the next day.

I bought a harness at Walmart of all places that says it would instantly stop pulling. I was reluctant, but thought I'd give it a try.

I just tried it for the first time this morning and he didn't even try to pull. Not once. He walked along like he was a show dog....lol. He has the retriever strength but definitely has the poodle prance...haha.

So is there anything wrong with using these?

I seem to recall reading something before about them not being the best for some reason, but since he didn't even attempt to pull, I'm trying to figure out how it could hurt him. It's padded, goes over his head and his front paws go through it.

He looks like my Lincoln!  He is almost 3 and 72 lbs, so you don't have to tell me about pulling!   We have the easy walk harness and it works about 90%, but he can still pull some when he really wants to. I think the harnesses are better because they do not pull on their neck/throats.   Just my opinion!

I had wanted a full size when we first started talking about getting one, but my husband was concerned I would have trouble with walking one that large, so we went with a medium. Now, I am very grateful that he's only 24 lbs..haha. I agree about the throat concerns with the regular collar as well. Winston really only pulls when he sees another dog or person. We live at the beach, so of course right now there are a lot more of both then we have in the winter so instead of running in to one or two dogs/people per walk we run into a dozen or more.

Winston is so adorable!  I just love his color!   I'd say if you found a good no-pull collar that easily then Great!  I haven't had luck with collars but the Thunderleash is working most of the time.  But beware that someday Winston might start pulling again and you'll have to switch tactics - hopefully this won't happen!

Thank you, we sure think he's cute too. I will have to check out the Thunderleash. That's not one I have heard of. Your warning that he may learn to pull through it has made me suggest to husband and daughter that maybe for now I'll just use the harness and they can stay with his regular collar:-)

Is it this one??  We got these at Walmart and have used them for over 5 yrs now and have had no issues.  My girls have actually outsmarted the harness and learned to pull over time but it's still not as bad as without it though.  I really like it, it's secure and doesn't rub or chafe under the arms.

In addition to this when they are pulling (I have a more recent bad knee, ankle, shoulder and then a history of back issue).  Anywho when they start pulling more we run the leash down their back, around their bellies and when you bring it up you loop it under the leash section that ran down their backs so it holds them at the waist.  This definitely slows them down.  We often do this in a crowd.  Works great.

That's how the Thunderleash works.  You can adjust the slack around the belly and also the tightness so it won't get too tight if they lunge.

Our trainer at Petsmart showed us that, but I am not quite sure how to do it properly. I get tangled...   LOL

We have the thunder leash but the Easy walk is easier to put on,.

I'm left handed and always get it backwards so my daughter is constantly correcting me. The easiest way I can do it

I used a similar harness until my 60# Charley started pulling hard when he would see another dog.  I got the gentle leader.  He doesn't like it but he does not pull.  I also have back & arthritis issues so I had to do something. I have read that some of the harnesses can be hard on their front legs. I let Charley off the leash when I am in a safe area where he can run.  As long as he doesn't see a cat or squirrel he comes when I call.
