I tether Mousse to a door in our kitchen, when I'm in there, or in adjoining living room, and can't watch him, and for some reason he keeps peeing directly into and on the vent in the floor! The first time, and every time after, I've doused it with Natures Miracle, washed the vent cover with hot soapy water and even sprayed and wiped out where I can reach inside the vent. He almost never has accidents anywhere else, as long as I don't forget to take him out or something else that's my fault. It's like there's some reason he likes to pee there, anyone have any ideas? It's so gross, and driving me crazy!
It sounds as though Mousse has chosen the vent as his personal spot!! Dogs can smell 1 drop of urine in a gallon of water. If there is any place that the Nature's Miracle can't get to, Mousse will still be able to smell the vent as his personal spot. I would try a little physical household management in addition to your other housetraining. Find something that you can place over the vent (a table, bureau, basket, etc.) to physically block the area so that he cannot possibly have access to it for now. I tend to tether puppies to me directly (one end on the dog-the other attached to me either around my waist, wrist, ect.). Hope this helps.
Sandra is right....you're going to need to find a way to keep him from accessing that vent - and you might want to keep him from any other vents too for awhile. And I too tethered our puppy directly to me - until he got big enough that if I wanted to go in one direction and he wanted to go another - he won! Good luck!
Thanks for the suggestions. Mousse isn't real fond of our Roomba (not scared of, just cautious) so I put it on top of the vent. I knew he wouldn't push it out of the way, or pee on it! :) So far so good...I love this dog, but I'll be very happy when the potty training is over!
