Training- When others in the Household are not helping (Part Vent)

I thought about posting this in the Training group...But since it is about Puppy training I decided to put it here.

I am wondering what others do when Spouses or Children (old enough to help) Dont help with the training. (or do it all wrong : o  ....   So maybe I just need to Vent!

My dh does not follow through.  he is also not Consitent.

For instance...He never seems to use the right voice...For Calling Trixie.  Can you please call her with a Little more Excitment & just say "Trixie Come'  Not in a stern voice! (save that for NO)

This morning he found her Chewing on a pen.  He took it away & said to me Trixie had a pen.  Well did you tell her NO! Since you caught her in the act?   of course not.

Does he praise her after she goes Potty?  Once in a while.

Often I will ask if she peed & he will Say 'I Didnt Notice!'  Grrr

If she jumps on the edge of the couch to be pet...Does he pet that cute little Puppy?  Well of course!

I know I want to too.  But I also want to end up with a Well behaved dog.

When I point out things...Like I might say- ' Call her with an Excited Voice'  Or dont call her to you when she has something in her mouth that you need to take away from her....You need to go to her & get it out of her mouth.

he hasnt said anything...But I know hes not happy about me telling him how to 'train' her. he is also not chaning what I have asked him to change.

The list goes on.

What do you do when you have someone that is making training harder?

Yes, I can relate too!!  I have completed several puppy training classes. DH would not go to classes.   Eventually DH saw that the dog was really obeying me.  Then we went to a basic obedience class together.  DH went to every class.  We still have our differences, but waiting until HE was ready to commit to a class seemed to be key.  And yes, hearing it from the trainer (even tho its exactly the same thing that you said) has more impact.   Best of Luck

Its kinda the same in our house too. Lucy is my dog. He ADORES her and plays with her etc but training is up to me.

My 6 yr old daughter does the commands PERFECTLY.. .funny how my husband still says "leave it" when he is trying to get her to "drop it". My daughter will then go get the clicker and bag of treats and get Lucy to drop the item and click.

Ha.

my 3 year old can also get the dog to sit, lay down and drop it without having to yell....interesting!!

How funny that the kids get the dogs to listen so well.

We went to Class Orientation on Thurs.

We dont start class til May 5th.  I do hope he will listen there.  I took one of our dogs years ago to 1 Class...And didnt really listen to the instructor.

I can relate! It was the same with our previous dog Parker as well. I wrote down the commands to use and ask him to please stick to those words otherwise it is too confusing. It is especially important to teach leave it and down at this juncture, because we now have a toddler and baby. We start puppy classes Sunday.
I think they are called husbands and kids.
Well, today I went to work (substitute teaching) and left the husband and dogs at home alone.  Oh my!  My DH left the doors in the house open and was working outside on the deck.  When he came in for lunch, the table cloth had been pulled off the table, along with the placemats, and the napkin holders eaten.  When he went into the bathroom, the kleenex holder was torn apart and the kleenex scattered all over the bed and floor.  In the bathroom, the toilet paper was all pulled off of the holder.  After lunch, DH put the things back on the table cloth and reset the table.  An hour later it was off again and another napkin holder eaten.  (They are tasty little wooden napkin holders coated with gold flake.)   Oh well, I guess kleenex and toilet paper and napkin holders are much better than shoes and sweaters.  My stuff was all put away.  And he wonders why I never want to leave the dogs alone.  Do they need to be better trained, or does he?
OMD....I would not be happy.  If you figure out how to get your DH "trained", please let me know.
After 33 years, I don't think so.  He does, however, make sure his bike shorts and smart wool socks are put away.
He needs to be better trained but I wouldn't hold my breath.
