I am SURE others have this problem...Peri has started attacking the water bowl. INSIDE the house! She will go at it and swat the heck out of the water and it gets everywhere. I am getting frustrated because it gets on the hardwoods and I have to watch her like a hawk while she drinks water.

Is this her poodle coming out? My best friend has a poodle mix and she does the same thing.

Any tips to break this habit would be greatly appreciated!

Beck's been doing this since we got him at 8 weeks. I got him a non-tip bowl http://www.amazon.com/Road-Refresher-Spill-Portable-Pet/dp/B001L4M2... It even comes with velcro tabs on the base so you can stick it to the floor. It pretty much solved the problem of his splashing water in the house, and I got a kids plastic wading pool and put it on our deck for him to splash in. It's funny to watch him around water but not so much fun to clean up the mess
Have you tried giving her ice cubes? They can't always replace regular water, but during times when you need her to "keep it clean", they may work. Macey loves ice cubes, either on their own or mixed in with her regular water.
My 3 love ice cubes. They will even do tricks for them. Harlow and Baxter will even sit in front of the frig and look longingly at the freezer until I give a cube.
Okay, Peri now LOVES ice cubes. She didn't pay attention to them at all until last week - she was playing at a neighbors and her friend Max (wheaten) got an ice cube. She got one and emulated him. So funny.
And she has stopped patting the water like she was...have no idea why!
Hmmm. Impressive that she would like to understand the properties of water. She understands that water comes in liquid and solid form, but I wonder what she would think of a high humidity day. Would she know that this is just another form of water? So we have a doodle who is pondering the wonders of science. Very cool!
Those bowls look awesome....thanks to all! I will buy one today :)
Kate, she is scared of ice....isn't that funny? It freaks her out and she barks.
The ice fear is funny. At our house you can't get ice out of the fridge without dropping one for Gracie during the process. She just stares at you till the magic ice machine sends one her way!!!
Our puppy has started doing a similar thing at around 4 months old. He has started playing in his water bowl, which makes a big mess inside. When he starts to do it, I take the water bowl away and set it up on the kitchen table. The trouble is I can't take it away for a long time because he needs to have water to be able to drink! So I only take it away temporarily, for about 15 minutes, then put it back. I'm hoping that will be enough for him to learn the water isn't for playing inside. If that doesn't work, I'll probably get one of those spill-proof buddy bowls.
I have been doing that too - take it away 10-15 minutes, then put it back down. They need the water, especially in this heat, so I hate taking it away from her! I am ordering a spill proof bowl. Even if she gets over her splashing, this will be a good investment for traveling!

Thanks to ALL!
HA! omg my doodle does that too! It's the strangest thing. I think shes trying to swim in it or something haha
This is Finn's #1 favorite game. Whenever he gets that rambunctious look in his eye he runs over to his bowl and starts smacking both paws in the water and creates a huge mess allover the hardwood floor. The bowl does not tip he just splashes it everywhere. This leads to favorite game #2. Chasing the towel I am trying to clean up the water with. Usually this is after a good fun time of running in the yard and getting some of his energy out so he is thirsty. I have to confess he is so well behaved and calm 95% of the time and he just looks like he is having Soo much fun with this that I just put the bowl up on the counter and let him drive me nuts during the clean up. It is not an every day thing though- that would lose it's cute factor pretty quickly...
