Rooney is now 15 weeks and he is just a great little guy - I love him.  But I do have a couple of issues.

My puppy hates to be brushed.  I've never had a dog or cat that didn't love to be brushed.  I want his hair to be long but how do I manage it if he won't let me brush him.  I wait til evening when he is sleepy but he wiggles, jumps and tries to bite the brush.  How do I teach him that this can be a good feeling?

I've been a bad doodle mom.  Rooney has always slept in his crate without a whimper or potty issue and sleeps through the night.  Being here alone most of the time - I let him sleep on the bed with me one night.  I loved it and he was good as gold.  Is his sleeping on the bed a bad thing?

We are doing a twice weekly ear wash as he had some "gunk" in there - a little bacteria but no yeast.  Is this common and once we get this cleared out how often do we do the ear wash?

Stupid questions I'm sure but I want to do this right.  Thanks

Hi Jane,
1. Gavin wasn't a huge brushing fan either. He still does not like the slicker brush. He is okay with a pin brush and best with a comb. I used to wait till he was sleepy too. I also stuck a chew of some sort in his mouth to keep it busy and off the brush. I think you just have to persist. Some will say to put him on a table to brush him - they seem to do better than way.

2. Sleeping with you is only a bad thing if you think it is. As long as you train him to only come up when you say and get down when you say, you can enjoy puppy time on your bed if you want to. Gavin isn't allowed on furniture, but that was just a personal choice that we made.

3. I have to watch Gavin's ears too. What type of wash are you using? Did the vet give you ear drops to use? For regular maintanance I wash Gavin's ears about every two weeks. Sometimes I just wipe them out with an ear wipe and sometimes I do a full wash with vet solution. After a bath or a swim I clip them back so the air can get in to dry them out,

BTW your questions are not stupid at all!
Good Luck!
OMD! I can't believe he just lets you clip his ears back! What a good boy. Rooney is not allowed on our furniture but I did let him sleep with me and I think we both really like it. Maybe this will confuse him if I let him on the bed and nothing else. He is just so darn cute I couldn't help myself. He is like a little toddler.

The ear wash is from the vet, Epi-Otic. I did it tonight for the first time and it wasn't bad and Rooney was really good about it.

Funny that after I posted this tonight - Rooney did let me brush him some. With a red Les Pooches. So I made some progress. I hate how his hair looks after brushing. He has beautiful individual spiral curls and when brushed they just get like a cotton ball, fuzzy. Then (and my husband though I was nuts) I used the Les Pooches on my hair and I have to say - I LOVED THE FEELING. LOL. Go figure. Maybe I could train Rooney to brush my hair.
Kona comes up on the bed with us at night but jumps off when we turn the light off. He sometimes asks to come up in the morning too. He never ever gets on the other furniture. In fact after our other dog died he was so sad we invited him up on the couch, but he refused. It was like he was a little disgusted with us for asking something so ridiculous as letting a dog on the couch.
Those Les Pooches Brushes are REALLY ROUGH on a baby puppy's skin. Maybe using a wide toothed comb might be better for now.

I know they are good brushes but the bristles are so mean and sharp I have stabbed myself and bled. I think they are too rough for a puppy. Maybe that is why you may be having a hard time! Be real careful with those until he gets older and even now those darn things can be used as a weapon!
Good point Joanne, I stabbed a little hole in my hand last night on the Les Pooches, it still hurts!! Waa Waa Waa!
I love the Clip!
I love this pic. What a great dog to let you do that. I am going to try that.
This is a great idea! Although I'm not sure Wrigley would let me clip his ears back. Too cute!
I'm glad you've asked these questions. My pup is 14 weeks. Brushing requires all sorts of distraction!
What to do:

His coat will be fine for WEEKS. He has a beautiful nice new coat. Just brush a tiny bit, give him a chew to keep him busy and something for his mouth. Make it a good thing now, just so he knows the sensation. Heck Jane, he was just perfectly groomed so his baby coat probably needs no attention.

The BED--Heck Yeah--CUDDLE! Many don't do this and I respect that, but I always found this time with a puppy wonderful. They are so busy all day that bedtime was a time to roll them over and rub their chests and talk or sing to them. Quiet time. Nice. Neither one of mine like to sleep with us. They stay 10 minutes and are gone. I bet Rooney would really like this time with you too.

Ear--welcome to the world of ears. I have no recommendations. Spud has one bad ear and I have yet to find what I need to do. Here is another hair tie picture for you though

ENJOY That little guy.
You are cracking me up - a scrunchie? I'm going to try this - lol. We'll look like twins. Thanks for the advice. I need to relax and do what feels right for us.
Awe... The only thing tori ever did with a hair scrunchy was swallow one of mine once when she was a puppy! UGH! I just got a shiver down my spine recalling that one! LOL
