So Lucy is 11 weeks... actually 12 weeks on Thursday.  She knows sit and down and come really well.  Well, well for a puppy I guess??  She kind of decides when she wants to obey, but is pretty good for the most part :)

I'm trying to teach her "drop it."  Both with a toy of hers and something she actually should not have.  Which she doesn't have much of an opportunity for, as we still watch her like a hawk around the house.  It's slow going, but we're trying.

What other things are good to work on at this age?  And I'm not sure how much to expect.  A) I'm not an experienced trainer - I'm totally new to this.  B) She's still young.... right?

Excellent!  I will incorporate this method definitely!

I'm kind of different in that I don't worry about obedience commands before age 5/6 months.  Yes, puppies learn very quickly.  And yes, doodles are smart.  But their attention spans are limited and there's so much to teach them without even considering commands...AND it pretty much all goes to pot as they become "teenagers" (6 months to a year) that I consider that 6-12 month period the critical time of training.  So I put my effort into strict obedience at that time when they are more likely to test than I do before.  With my youngest dog I did it this way and she still did great with obedience training despite not starting earlier.

Before age 5 or 6 months I care more about:
-- Learning to potty in the right places and if possible potty on command
-- Keeping teeth off people
-- Learning to be handled all over their body for grooming, check-ups, and general comfort with people touching them.
-- Keeping 4 feet on the floor for greetings
-- Accepting confinement (crates, gates, leashes)
-- General socialization to the world at large.

For me that takes enough work that I don't bother with much else. Perhaps "leave it" or "drop it" but other commands...I dunno.  I think it's so much more helpful to learn these other commands when their attention spans are stronger and they can withstand more than 2 minutes of training time as well as can learn to respond correctly rather than in sloppy puppy ways.  But I recognize I'm not typical in my opinion.
