Early coat change

Hi everyone. Just wanted to post this image of the transition of our F1 mini goldendoodle since we brought him home on May 11. His soft blond puppy hair started falling out around 3 months and by 4 months a new, dark undercoat began to appear. This feels wiry compared to the blond puppy hair that is particularly soft on the top of his head and neck. The dark colour started shifting to reddish and by 5.5 months - today - you can see that only wisps of the original puppy hair remain, the top of his head and neck are also now beginning to shed out. So....anyone have any guesses on what might happen next? Seems really early for such a huge coat change.

My Sadie, is now a 7 month (6 1/2) f1b mini Goldendoodle.  Her half-sister, Annabelle is almost 3 years old.  (They have the same mini-poodle Daddy).  Annabelle is full on “doodle”.  Sadie has shed throughout her little life, and her coat has changed drastically.  I am going to try to include a couple of pics of Sadie’s transition.  She reminds me of your sweet pup.

Hi Stephanie, my soon to be 6 month old GD has gone through exactly the same thing that your puppy did. The age is even the same. My puppy used to have a really full coat but she started to shed all the puppy fur since 3 months or so up until 5 months. She lost all the whitish baby fur and they are all replaced with darker hair in her body. The guard hair (longer and wispy hair) are still there but my puppy seems to lose it too. Her head and chest still have real soft hair with lighter color. My puppy looks like two different dogs combined. head and body. Just like how you described your puppy. My puppy always looks so unkept, wispy, and scruffy. We joke she looks homeless (we really love our puppy!! lol). I tried to look up other dogs that went through this in DK and I haven't found one yet but your puppy. I attached a photo of my puppy from today. She doesn't shed anymore but just looks so messy....lol Our puppies may not look like other GDs. But they're unique and fun to watch I think. I'm really interested in how your puppy turns out!!

Wow! There is another doodle on this planet that looks like ours! This is precisely what is happening to our pup Remy. I'm also very interested to see how your pup grows and how her coat changes. Remy has an Instagram account that I post too fairly often at https://www.instagram.com/i.am.remy.thedood/. I don't know if it's a genetic throwback but suspect it must be. His Dad is a miniature poodle (registered from Europe) and his Mom is a registered American retriever. He looks so different from his siblings. Here is a picture of Remy's 4 sisters.
