Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

Hi,

We've chosen our next dog!  She's a 5-week old bernedoodle (Bernese mountain dog/standard poodle) - coming home in late September.  We wanted something really different from Luna (F1 mini goldendoodle) since our hearts are still broken from her passing.

I know Luna never had the tufts around her eyes and she was a flat-coated goldendoodle so I'm predicting at least "scruffy" for this little one.  I looked at some pictures of Bernese puppies and she only looks slightly fluffier than one of those so I don't think she will be curly.

What do you think?

She gets prettier and prettier. You do have a great start on training with her. She sounds like she has a wonderful personality for your growing family.

So far we think so :)  She's quite calm (when she doesn't have the puppy crazies) and she is quite trainable.  We are not messing around starting the training early since she's going to be a big girl lol.

Riley is now (nearly) 14 weeks old!

She's about 22 pounds (brought her home at 12 pounds about 5 weeks ago!)

We just went out trick o' treating and she did great.  Wasn't scared of anything (including a HUGE dog who rushed at her barking, she didn't even flinch... brave little one!).  The kids and costumes and stuff didn't phase her at all.  A very different dog than our Luna who was a much more cautious dog (aka she was a chicken). :)

She is just precious.

What a cuddledoodle!  Has she been groomed yet?  I'd hate to cut off that beautiful shaggy coat!

No grooming yet - I've been brushing her regularly and haven't noticed any matting which is nice.

She seems to be getting a bit more curly (could just be the weather though) so we'll see.

Picco didn't get a real groom till a year old.  I was able to keep him matt free and did some trimming his face & head.   He wouldn't put up with all that brushing today!  I still like looking at his shaggy photos but also remember the hassle of care.  Enjoy it as long as you and Luna can!

Absolutely adorable! It sounds like you have a very good dog.

Thanks!  So far we think so - her behavior seems to tend more towards the stoic/calm Bernese and laid back poodle side (rather than the scared-of-everything variety of Bernese) which is great.

I love Riley! She could really be a stuffed animal. I think it's interesting that the pigment on her nose filled in. I liked the little speckled nose. But she looks like perfection. Is she as soft as she looks?

I read that the noses of most Bernese start speckled then fill in.  Her name at the breeder was "Freckles" which we thought was just because of her nose but she actually has freckled feet and a little on her belly too, so that's probably why ;)  I don't think the feet will fill in though since she has those white "socks".

She is VERY soft - not quite as soft as Luna was though :)  I think it may be partly diet related though because we only recently switched Riley to a good food (she was on Purina at the breeder, yuck).  Luna ate Acana and had super lustrous hair all the time.

16 week update - Weight prediction time!

Riley is now 16 weeks old so I've been told we can estimate her weight at this time.

She's 30 lbs, so weight prediction for large breed (as I understand it) is double the weight then add 10.. 70 lbs!  That's about what we were hoping for so we are happy.

Riley REALLY likes the snow (her Bernese is showing...) which is good because up here in Ontario we get a LOT of it! :)

Her freckled giant paws get me every time.

This isn't the greatest picture but hey look she does have eyes!
