Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

Well the results are in and I'm not sure how to interpet them???  On one hand they imply she does have labradoodle in her but the third breed has us scratching our heads.  Okay so what is she you ask, okay okay I won't make you wait any longer.  According to the results "the most likely combination is miniture poodle, greyhound and labrador retriever".

They provided lineage back to her great grandparents.  On one side it clearly repeats miniture poodle then on the other a greyhound / labrador retriever mix.  In some of the greyhound descriptions there seems to be some matching items or it's a strong coincidence (i.e. coloring, ticking, high set ears and she LOVES LOVES LOVES to run).  Clearly I need to read up on greyhounds to see what other comparisons there are.

So is the mystery solved or more questions presented?  Since she came from a breeder in Bakersfield that some DK members know I'd like to believe she does have doodle in her, even though she looks nothing like one.  On the other hand her personality is nothing like most doodles I've met so there are questions still lingering in my mind.  She's a big time chewer which is a real problem.  We just came home from a two week vacation and the girls were very busy making a mess of things but the worst of what they ate; mom's hearing aid!  That'll cost me.....

Oh, I am so sorry about the hearing aid.  Now about the 'real stuff' - Greyhound, huh?  Greyhounds are BIG dogs. Labs are BIG dogs!  I know miniature poodles are little, but really?  Hmmmmm.......  This is really quite interesting... and shocking ... and fun, fun, fun.  Congratulations on having a one of a kind ...... gre-la-doodle!  Whatever she is, Josie is really a very special dog.  I adore how loving she is.

Interesting reading on greyhounds and some descriptions definitely fit her! Specifically the prey drive, timidness, always cold, sensitivity to drugs, her desire to run/chase and her speed, definite hound like characteristics, it even mentioned the two tone coloring and ticking, and oh there was more! Yes, she is a sweetheart and how she loves to cuddle! I only get that from sassy in the early morning hours just before we get up then its play with me, play with me, play with me! Lol. The prey drive has me most concerned though with our camping, she will definitely always have to be tethered. ;(

Looks like I need to seek out a greyhound group/owner to get more info for her safety and my piece of mind.

The DNA report indicated her adult weight would be between 28-47 lbs and she was last weighed in at 39 so it seems to be on target so far? I did not include a photo, I wanted it based solely on DNA.

In theory I'd like to think the mystery is solved and if the DNA report is correct then there is definitely doodle in her :) just with a splash of greyhound too! Lol

What is interesting is that she IS a doodle.  I really, really felt she was poodle and ???? ----with my guesses it never was lab and poodle and never a splash of greyhound.  I didn't know that Josie's coloring and ticking was greyhound.  My cousin has a greyhound.  She is a big dog, and a true, snuggling couch potato.  When they got her from the rescue, they had to sign papers that they would NEVER have her off leash unless she was fenced in. Her other major area needing supervision is that she is a huge counter surfer.

Whatever Josie is, she is lovely! I would send a picture to her breeder and ask for an explanation. AND she is deleloping some doodle hair on her tail and rear. It will be really interesting to see how she matures.

Thank you. We will give it another try?  Thanks again for a great pool day, we actually tuckered Sassparilla out! lol

I got the DNA results back for Maggie last Friday.  Fascinating stuff!!!!  I think it's funny that she can pass for a doodle more than Josie, yet Jose it at least 3/4 doodle and Maggie turned out to be ZERO!!!  Ha!!!!  Her "mixed breed" components can be 50% to 75% of her genetics and the two main ones of those are American Eskimo Dog and Briard (French Sheepdog).  The other two can be from 25% to 50%....depending on the great grandparents.  Those are the funny ones....MinPin and Rottweiler!

But I've really enjoyed reading up on it all and it really explains a lot!  Her hair was coming in so thick and long and soft waves with only a little length adding to the feet and mustache, so it really is a blend of the Eskimo and Briard breeds.  Her personality is VERY much the Briard!  Quiet devoted heart wrapped in fur.  And from day one, she would bend over, put her big head into Kona's chest and push him around the back yard.  Her sheepherder instincts are really strong.  The big broad head and muzzle shape and shorter flopped over ears and thick muscular chest and thighs are definitely the Rottweiler.  And her leaping and mad hunting skills for the gopher that Kona never cared about are the MinPin (rat hunters).   It all just makes me love her more.  (And understand her looks and actions a lot better!  I'll be training her differently now to let her take advantage of her herding and agility skills more. Kona isn't even CLOSE to her athletic abilities!)

The really funny thing is that when she was brought to the shelter, everyone assumed that her face being completely covered was from neglect, and they groomed her to look like a mix between a Goldendoodle and a giant Malti-poo.  Now I realize that her previous owners probably bought her as a Briard mix and groomed her to look like a shaggy Briard (think of the big shaggy dogs from My Three Sons and Married With Children)
