Hey everyone, I'm not a teacher but wanted to share this article that was in our local paper this week. This guy happens to be our neighbor and this was the first I'm hearing of any of this, but thought it was interesting enough to share with all of you. If you find it interesting and helpful you may want to share with the leadership at your school system.

Good article. Thanks for sharing. We need more superintendents like this guy. Yes, things are definitely out there and the government is a major offended in throwing things away. We have Ft. Ord nearby, and many acres have been turned over to all kinds of organizations (universities, cemetaries, bus companies, horse and dog parks, public lands for biking, hiking, etc.) But everyone needs to keep on top of things as the Department of Defense donates these lands.
Just last night I was trying to get a plan going for the buildings that have been sitting vacant for 50 years and are supposed to be an art community one of these days. Why not get started?? Many schools and universities in California are shutting down programs in the arts and the equipment is stored or given away. We could get the buildings refurbished as ceramics, glass, painting, weaving, print making, etc. My idea was to get the shops set up as Phase I, do demonstrations and set up art shops to sale items made at the Arts Community as Phase II, and them start offering classes in the various arts and crafts areas as Phase III. Why not? We gave plenty of trained artists graduating from colleges and no jobs for them. I think it could work.
Great article. Thanks for bringing such a positive solution to us.
Lynda, I hope your plan works too. I have driven by those empty buildings on so many summer vacations. They need to be used!
