Hello Everyone,

Amazon has just announced creation of a new dog food called Wag. It’s available on Prime for $44.95 per 30# bag. Their site says it’s made in the USA from New Zealand lamb. No grain. However, their site says the rest of the stuff in it comes from the USA, and “other countries”. Does anyone have any recommendations or comments concerning this new food?  The price is great. I currently use Acana Ranchlands, at $84 for a 28# bag.

Thank you,

Bill.

This food is only sold through Amazon to Amazon Prime customers. If you are not a Prime customer, you would have to add the cost of the Prime membership to the cost of the food.
I personally would not feed any food that is only available online, from a single source. But that's me.

I'd also have to look into the sourcing, regarding those "other countries". If the Far East is involved, that's a problem.

I took a look at the lamb formula to get an idea of the nutritonal values of this line. The Omega 6:3 ratio is a bit too high. The macronutrient percentages though looked good.
However...the food contains only 346 calories per cup. That's pretty low, and it means you would have to feed more food, which also affects your costs. Your current Acana Ranchlands contains 455 calories per cup.  This means that you would have to feed 4 cups of the Wag food to get the calories in 3 cups of Ranchlands. So you'd be buying 60 lbs of dog food for every 45 lbs you're buying now. That's going to cut your savings significantly.

Hi Karen:  Thanks for your analysis. I’m not switching my doodle from Ranchlands. But the price of “Wag” interested me. I’m going to watch for posts concerning this new Amazon dog food. It’ll be interesting to see what others may have experienced with this new dog food. Bill

When you read about what others have experienced, keep in mind what they were feeding previously. The Wag food is cheap enough that it compares pricewise to some inferior products. If someone who was feeding, let's say a Purina product, switches to Wag, they may very well see an improvement in their dog. You on the other hand would be going from a much much higher quality product to a lower quality product, so the experiences of someone moving in the opposite direction are not going to necessarily be predictive of your experience if you should switch.
