Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum
I'm following the great discussion here on Taurine deficiency, but had to ask how many of us have witnessed the complete panic on FB? I know I can't be the only one assuming that someone has an agenda....to see millions switching over to "the 5 Big Companies" that just happen to be in line with each other? My head is going to explode. I came here knowing there would be sensible reason and I've tried directing many other worried dog owners here. That one huge group is so one sided, sensored and in your face. Just wow.
My issue is that I need chicken free. I have three doodles, at 3 different stages. I usually end up with 3 diets. I just switched to Zignature again and was very happy until the posts on FB....even in the doodle groups now, started screwing with my common sense. Someone here please assure me I'm not killing my babies slowly. Why must Pro Plan be the answer??? And Royal Canin is confusing and expensive. Hills??? Seems like we've gone back 15 years with that choice. Eukanuba and Iams…..sugar coated cereal.
Has anyone seen the chart they have that they do not want posted outside the group? Am I the only one in there that's suspicious? If they claim to be helping dogs, why not post everywhere they can to spread the word?
Just thank you all for being here.

In addition to our excellent discussion on the Taurine Deficient DCM issue, we also have a more recent one that addresses this very issue: the nonsense and inaccurate info in the FB dog groups. Here's a link: https://doodlekisses.com/group/thefoodgroup/forum/topics/taurine-de...
I have stopped following most of the dog groups on FB and I ignore any posts about food in any of the groups I do follow.
Mary, you are not killing your babies. Despite the lies on FB, there is no documentation of one single dog who has died from the very rare nutrition-linked form of DCM. Not one. And there are only a handful of documented cases of dogs who have even been diagnosed with it, again despite the lies on FB. And of the cases that actually have been documented, they still have no idea at all what causes it; still no proof that it has anything at all to do with any specific type of diet. Your dogs have a better chance of getting just about any other disease out there. And those who have foolishly switched to some of those garbage foods, particularly Purina foods, are putting their dogs at risk of developing AIHA due to the use of synthetic vitamin K (menadione) in those foods, which a lot more serious than the nutiritonal form of DCM which is 100% curable.
Does that help?
Karen, this helps much more than you know, lol. I question my insanity and intelligence each time I see a post. I've stopped looking and turned off all notifications in the groups I wish to remain. The one they keep pushing people to, I'm unjoining and I expect to be deleted anyway because I questioned why they don't want their chart posted outside the group is they're in it for ALL the dogs. They're really good at deleting and not approving posts. It's like an armed guard runs the place.
Who does run the group? Is it a vet?
I honestly can't figure it out. There are about 12 people as admins. I'm waiting to leave until I read everything in their "units" I'm curious now. One of them does claim to work at Tufts. I'll look a bit further.
It's run by this FB page that seems to be linked to someone named Trish Miller. https://www.facebook.com/taurineconcerns/?eid=ARDuO_tnJ3EHiouef3N2R...
She breeds Golden Retrievers.
Also, there are not even 5 big companies. There are only 3. Mars owns Royal Canin and Iams/Eukanuba.
Also, this advisory group that they keep referring to has executives from all three (Nestle-Purina, Colgate-Palmolive and Mars) sitting on their board. Lisa Freeman, the veterinary nutritionist whose articles keep getting passed around, is on the board and also affiliated with Purina. So is there an agenda? Um.....yeah.
I'm curious what chart you're referring to. I haven't seen it.
I am not at all worried that I'm killing my kids with their food, and Maggie eats grain free - though I am worried about the stupid Pro Plan that I'm getting ready to transition the puppy off of. There is something in that food that makes them go nuts. I don't know if it's sprayed on fat or sugar or what, but as bad as it is for them they all want it.
Sometimes the hysteria makes me second guess myself too. What is really hard is when the vets are jumping on the bandwagon too. They are well educated. They should realize that this whole thing just makes no sense from a scientific standpoint.
Once again, repeat after me:
There is no nutrition curriculum in veterinary school.
To quote Marion Nestle (PhD Professor Emeritus Nutrition):
"We know enough about medical education to know that doctors know hardly anything about nutrition. The same is true of veterinarians. Most veterinary colleges teach nutrition only minimally, meaning that veterinarians get their nutrition information from pet food companies."
Amen :)
I know that, and you know that, but what I take issue with is that they are giving nutrition advice and therefore people assume that they are experts. They're the doctor after all. It seems negligent for them to pass this information on like gospel. I want my vet to be transparent and say, hey we don't really know instead of perpetuating this fear-mongering rumor that's going around on the internet.
They also seem to be high-j****** every food question posted in other dog/doodle groups. That's how I got there. It really has gotten beyond annoying and scary. They seem almost cult like with the "please join this group" (with link). I think they infiltrated every breed.
