Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum
Since we got Racey (3 years ago), we've been on EVO-turkey and chicken. Well with all the recalls EVO had we switched for a bit to Orijen-red meat. Evo was supposedly all fixed so we decided to go back to EVO-red meat.
We feed the same food as my in-laws because our dogs are together so often (which is why we started on the EVO-turkey and chicken). My in-laws have a black lab and she has allergy problems. I read on here that a lot of labs have allergies to birds which is why when EVO was recalled I decided we would go with the Orijen-red meat formula. Well Katie actually seemed to do worse with that food than the EVO, but it also could have been the time of year because we know she is allergic to pollen etc based on the time of year when her allergies act up.
So once EVO was back on the market, we decided to go back to it, and figured we would give the red meat blend a try-Katie seemed to do fine with it, but again we don't know if it was the time of year or what. I won't lie, a big reason for switching back to it is where we can buy the food. There is only one store in our town that sells the Orijen food which means everytime we have to buy it, it is an hour long ordeal to get to that side of town, buy the food and get home. Not only that, but their hours are horrible if you are a normal 9-5 working person.
The local pet store has decided not to carry EVO anymore-the locally owned 5 minutes from my house. We just found this out last night and were about out of food, and so were my in laws. My in-laws wanted to try a different blend to see if it helps at all.
So now we are on to blue buffalo salmon blend. In the past, I've tried avoiding the salmon blends. We spend a lot of time on the river in the summer and I don't want Racey to associate the smell of salmon with her food-a lot of people up here have issues with their dogs rolling in salmon carcasses which pile up on the river banks. It is NASTY.
Note: Every food we've been on has been grain free.
Wish us luck!

I don't think a dog would associate the smell of a salmon based kibble with the actual live fish, so that's probably not something you need to worry about. To us it might smell similar, but dogs' noses are many thousands of times more powerful and more discerning than ours.
Good luck!
That is a great idea, I just checked it though and it isn't free shipping to Alaska =(
