My pup (20 months old) needs something to chew on and keep him busy when I just can't throw one more ball!

I have seen those dog bones in the pet store - the ones that look like they have been roasted - but they look a little scary! Any suggestions for something that is healthy, safe...and will keep him busy for a while??

thanks....

The best bones I've found are shin bones I buy from the butcher, boil for 40 minutes, cool and give to the girls. This way you know there are no additives or preservatives. You can cook a batch and freeze them for later too. There have been some discussions about raw vs cooked. I choose cooked, better safe then sorry.
BTW, these bones last for years!
ya - I have heard about raw bones - and I did worry about them getting skanky - so boiling sounds like a great idea!!!...and they don't splinter? That's my big fear - the choking!

So - I just go to the butcher and ask for shin bones? I think Magic will love this treat...
yep. doesn't get any more natural or cheaper! I let them eat the cooked marrow out of the middle too.
I do the same, but don't boil them as long. You can microwave them, too. I put the cooked marrow in Jack's bowl, cool the bone, and let him have it. They do last forever. You can even run them through the dishwasher to clean them if they get yucky over time.
I ask the butcher for marrow bones. Same thing as "shin bones", it's the cow's leg, lol.
Allie likes Deer & Elk Antlers from the specialty doggie boutiques. They last a VERY long time for her (at least 5 months).
...thanks....I will look for those....
I use the Elk antlers as well. It lasts long time and does not splinter. Elk's antlers are bigger and I think cheaper than the deer antlers.

We didn't have a good experience with one of those roasted bones. My husband thought she should have it and she loved it. Then she was very thirsty and just lie there and you could tell she didn't feel well. So she vomited and then she seemed much better. That night we put her to bed in her crate and we awoke to some barking which was odd for her. Well I checked to see what was the matter.... There she was, head to toe in POOP!! It looked like there had been an explosion! Of course she had to go to the vet etc. No more roasted bones for Sadie!
She likes deer antlers and they last a long time, bully sticks were gone in less than 30 minutes. Sometime I freeze yogurt with a few treats inside a kong.
OK...I am definately staying away from those roasted bones! - what a disaster!! I'm sure I have seen the deer antlers...gonna check today - plus those shin bones. Rainy day today...good day for a treat....
I'm in the same boat. Anything flavored, roasted or glazed... I'm asking for trouble.
Good site for antlers: www.antlerpantry.com
I am a big fan!
Thanks for the site!
