It's going to depend on weight, and what other EFA's the dog is getting in his diet. Most premium foods have EFA's in them, and many of the foods used in homecooking do, too. I'm going to do a search for recommended total amounts, if i can find it, but beyond that, it is going to vary with every dog depending on lots of factors. For an adult dog, it would really be hard to give too much, I think, but I'm going to look into it, Janie.
Wow! This one is very complicated!
Okay, first, read this for some basic info on EFA's: http://placervillevet.com/Omega_3_fatty_acids.htm
From the above article:
"Give pets of all ages one teaspoonful of cod liver oil per fifty lbs. or the equivalent amount of fish oil gel caps."
Now we need to know how much Omega 3 & Omega 6 are in 1 tsp of CLO. So, here's the nutrient info: http://www.nutritiondata.com/facts/fats-and-oils/628/2
And, to make it easier for those who just want to cut to the chase:
"Total Omega-3 fatty acids 888mg Total Omega-6 fatty acids 42.1mg"
Got that?
LOL
I've been giving Willy 5.0 ml of Plato Wild Alaska Salmon oil. I started at 6 months, and the directions I have go by weight, starting at 3#s and going up to 100#s.
