I'm not sure if this is the right place to ask this (and sorry if it's not) but Maizey-bear has been quite gassy over the past few days.  On saturday we were over at a friend's house and maizey was playing with their dog. I didn't realize we would stay so long and so maizey ended up eating their dog's food - Nutro as well as a whole mini bag of taste of the wild sample pack.  She's been on Fromm's chicken a la veg or the duck one plus a couple of spoonfuls of the canned beef stew (which actually smells good) for quite a while now.  She started getting gassy that night at their house (oops) and then had some soft stools Sunday morning (which I chalked up to the abrupt alternative food shift).  Anyways, stools have returned to their 'mostly solid' normal state (although whoa are they offensive smelling) but the gas has not yet gone away and it's now Tuesday.

After doing some google research and getting freaked out, I called the vet who said if she's not lethargic and eating fine and pooping normally then the gas will eventually go away.  My question for the group is (and I'm probably over-reacting) but is gas something that's caused by a change in food?  Could it have been the 2 different types of dry kibble (instead of her normal fromm's)?  Any home remedies?  Also as a side note does fromm's normally cause such stinky stool??  She loves fromm's and so I have no plans to switch, but just wondering.

I've learned my lesson and need to keep some kibble in my purse just in case!

Nutro is not a very good food, and usually contains ingredients which Maizey is not accustomed to and which could certainly cause her to have gas. It sounds to me like her GI tract is still not back to normal. You might try giving her a tablespoon or two of plain unflavored fat free yogurt with her meals, that should help.

As far as stinky stool, I've never come across any that isn't stinky, regardless of what the dog was eating, lol. But having gas and an upset tummy can definitely make that worse.

Thanks so much! I'll try the yogurt. I didn't realize Nutro wasn't such a great food - I thought that the TOTW was okay (since she used to be on that) and then my friend's dog didn't eat her bowl of food so Maizey snuck over and scarfed down the whole bowl...  probably since it was like eating a big serving of fast food.  :)

Thanks again.  This site is so helpful.  It is so easy to get worried that something terrible is going on inside her.  I am a little worried how much more neurotic I'll become when I have kids.

TOTW is fine, but not mixed with Nutro, lol.

Kids are easier, believe it or not, at least when it comes to knowing what to feed them. But the worries are the same.

I think that food in general causes "stinky stool".  It is poop after all  :)

Kidding aside, I haven't fed Fromms so I can't help you there.  But with my 2, the smell does change a bit depending on what they have eaten.  It stink regardless, but there are times that are worse than others.
