Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

Hi-

We are picking up our 8 week old goldendoodle later this week and she is currently being fed Life's Abundance All Stage Grain Free. I know LA is not recommended and my plan was to switch her to Fromm's grain free puppy food (Praire Gold). My question though is if it is necessary to keep her on a grain-free food or if I can transition her to Fromm's standard puppy food (gold). Thoughts?

Hi Piper! I don't have experience to weigh in on a transition but we've used Fromm's standard puppy food for our 10 month old doodle since we got him. In his case the breeder used Iams and we gradually transitioned him to minimize stomach upset.

Some dogs do fine with grains, others don't. There's no way to know if yours will do well with a transition to a food that contains grains down the road, you can only try. Personally, I'd stay with grain-free.

It's very important though that you do not change the puppy's food for at least 2 weeks after she comes home, which means you're going to have to get some LA. Just be sure that you don;t sign up for autoshipping.

Yes, already have the smallest bag of LA (no auto ship!) and planning to gradually transition after the two week period. Thanks for your input!

We started on a food with grain and accidentally got a grain-free bag once (they look so similar). Our pup's stool changed for the better with the grain-free and we've stuck to that ever since. I'll tell you, we were definitely not planning to change to grain-free when we got Angus...
