Hi All,

The last week Pepper successfully transitioned to Orijen Puppy from a raw food diet.

I gave her a braided bully stick earlier this week, and she really liked it and didn't have any stomach issues.  I also got himalayan chews and wanted to try giving her one.  She's teething and biting quite a bit, so the bully stick and antlers have really helped with that.

I was curious--how often do you give bully sticks and/or himalayan chews?  Could I give one a day (of only one, not both), or is that too frequently?  What's the right frequency?

Thanks!

In general, it's best not to introduce more than one new food or treat at a time. Having just transitioned to a radically different diet, I'm actually surprised your pup didn't have any digestive issues from the bully stick. I would wait a couple of weeks to introduce the himalayan chews.

How much/how often to give them depends partly on how much your dog consumes. There are all different sizes of bully sticks and himalayan chews, and some dogs don't consume the whole thing at once. Others go through a foot long bully stick in 5 minutes. So there's no way to really say "she can have X ounces of bully stick or himalayan chew per day." Keep in mind that there non-edible chew toys and objects to help with teething, and unlike bully sticks and himalayan chews, those don;t have any calories. :)

Congratulations on the successful transition. The first year they can be very "mouthy" and I put shoes in plastic drawers from Target. I would take Pierre to a local pet store that had a variety of chews, including pig ears, and such, at dog level in open bins and let him pick out what he liked.I remember a Kong toy that you placed some peanut butter inside, and he enjoyed that. He also enjoyed squeaky toys, but I would save those for supervised times, because they may open the toy to try to get at the noise maker. The seams can open over time. Maybe someone else can speak about the frequency.
