I am not the expert here but I have given my guys brown rice and chicken when they have had upset tummies. I think if you have sweet potato you could do that until someone wiser (read: Karen!) responds.
When you do start adding his food back into his diet, you need to do it slowly. I would give it a few days but again, I am not the expert. I just happen to be on DK this morning and I've had coffee so I'm chatty. ;o)
I feel your pain. I am not an expert just a tired and confused parent of a puppy who has had constant stool issues... poor guy!!
I have been on DK and received great advice. I also have different tips from the Vet but the one thing that I heard in both places is that after they have diarrhea and vomitting is you have to let them fast for 12-24 hours. You want to let their digestive system rest since it has been working so hard then give him a small bland meal. My vet said rice can expand in their stomachs and it isn't ideal...but everyone seems in agreement that chicken, sweet potato mixed with some metamucil is a good meal for them.
My puppy has had really bad diarrhea and the vet gave us Metro and told us to put him on RX or W/D. I think I am going to give him the sweet potato/rice for a few days with the metamucil and see how he does...
good luck
Brown rice is not your best choice for an upset stomach or diarrhea. The reason white rice is used is that it is very starchy and binding. I'd use the sweet potato until you can get some white rice.
It's a good idea to keep certain "sick dog" foods in stock, just as you do with young children. I always have a box of Success "boil in bag" white rice in my pantry. It cooks in the bag in ten minutes and it keeps forever.
What are k-cups?
Thank you for the great advice, Karen. I wondered about that. I keep white rice on hand for the doodles, too. I have run out on occasion and gave them brown, but it wasn't at the beginning of the mild diet cycle.
The brown rice won't hurt but the white is better.
Oh Lucas! What were you thinking. Coffee is going to stunt your growth!
In that case, I might have the vet check him. It's probably fine, but caffeine is poisonous to dogs, and he's probably dehydrated anyway from all the diarrhea & vomiting.
