Lawn Guard

Hello is it ok to give a dog lawn guard tablets by smith and fosters so the lawn doesn't burn out? My vet said they were healthy but I was just wondering if anyone had used them... thank you!

I looked up this product. I have always believed, coming from a human health point of view and extrapolating to dogs, that anything that you feed your dog to change it's urine is not a good idea. At any rate some of the ingredients in this seem harmless enough but there are others that may not be. I would not give these to my dogs just to avoid some possible, OK probable, brown spots in the lawn although I am a gardener too. Here's the list of ingredients and warning:

Microorganisms (Lactobacillus acidophilus, Lactobacillus casei, Bifidobacterium thermophilum, Enterococcus faecium in a 1:1:1:1 ratio)

14,500,000 cfu*

*colony forming units
1 chewable = 3.5 grams

Inactive Ingredients: Ascorbic Acid, Calcium Carbonate, Calcium Propionate (preservative), Lecithin, Natural and Artificial Cheese Flavor, Purified Water, Rice Bran, Rice Hulls, Safflower Oil, Sorbic Acid (preservative), Corn Oil, and dl-Alpha Tocopherol Acetate.

Storage: Store tightly closed in a cool, dry place at room temperature. Do not expose to excessive heat, moisture, or light.

Cautions: If your pet has a medical condition, consult your veterinarian before using this product. Safe use in pregnant animals or animals intended for breeding has not been evaluated. For animal use only. Keep out of reach of children and pets to avoid unwanted consumption

I am also concerned about changing the PH. My vet said aslong as there is not problem with urination it would be ok. The concern seems to be the build up of crystals in the bladder which would cause a problem in urination.

I would not use it either. I doubt that this product has been researched and tested for long term use or at all. Therefore whoever's dog is using it is basically the "guinea pig" so to speak.

I have dealt with far too many health problems with my Bichon (God rest his poor little soul!!!)  to even consider giving Casper a tablet to not get brown spots on my lawn...it's not worth the risk. I too believe that whoever takes the pills is a guinea pig - unfortunately!
