Happy new year everybody! If you thought the discussion where I asked about what ideal poop should look like was bad, wait for this one :)

Still picture perfect poops from Milo and in general a happy pup BUT...he has really smelly gas. Eye watering, room clearing silent farts, to be precise. Should I be concerned? Is this a prewarning that the food is not agreeing with him, or a result of the increase in protein in his diet? Have any of you tried any charcoal tablets or anything to help with this socially embarrassing problem?

thanks

A lot of us experienced this when first switching over to garin=free, but it's odd for it to develop after the dog's been eating the food for awhile. It's possible that it's just a temporary thing. I think everybody has gas once in awhile, dogs too, lol.

Have you given him any new treats lately? Any new people food over the holidays?

No, Karen, no new treats (he rarely gets anything other than few small pea sized cubes of cheese, and Zuke's). It started out with occasional gas about a month after he moved to Acana grasslands, but now he passes gas about every other hour or so. He doesn't seem uncomfortable, and his belly is sleek and flat. Maybe we should wait it out like Nancy said...

It took my dogs about 3 months to get over the gas when we switched to grain=free. And if we switch brands or 'flavors' they get gassy again.  If we give treats it can set off one or the other of them.  Also one of our dogs just is gassier than the others.

Tangie had super stinky gas, too. She eats Canidae and had for her whole life. Then, poof (pardon the pun) she started with the room clearing stinkers. I switched to a different flavour of the same brand. I also put a dollop of plain yogurt on top of the morning meal. It's worked miracles for us. Maybe the yogurt would be helpful for Milo, too. As a side note, someone told me that eating quickly means they swallow a lot of air. So, if you add a little water to the kibble and elevate the bowl so they are not reaching down and gulping, it also can help.

Good idea! The probiotics in the yogurt can work wonders. Make sure it's plain, low-fat unflavored yogurt (not Activia, not vanilla, not Greek-style).

Jackdoodle will not eat yogurt, so I never had the chance to see what probiotics can do to regulate the bacteria in the stomach until his recent bout with digestive problems after the hambone incident. I purchased some probiotic capsules for him, and they helped almost immediately.

I am going to try this! Callie has gas that can literally leave everyone in a room breathless.

Milo loves yogurt and eats a bit every day, maybe I will try and add to his kibble rather than as a treat. He has had the gas about two to three weeks now. Thanks for all your suggestions and support.

Camus has been a very gassy boy, then I started to give him dessert after each meal.  A large dollop of yogurt!  And, now he only has an occasional episode of gas.

All of you are great! I appreciate your advice so much. I am definitely going to try this.
