So I'm picking up my first doodle Friday!! I'm beyond excited but also nervous! He is a rehome... He was being fed whatever food was donated but when he gets here I want to make sure I feed him what he needs and what's best for him! Any recommendation? He is 6-7 months old. Goldendoodle male.

Hi Jordan.  Congrats on the new pup.  Check out the Recommended Foods List.  There are a lot of great options.  http://www.doodlekisses.com/group/thefoodgroup/forum/topics/recomme...

It's a good idea to gradually transition him from his current food to one of the recommended foods in the link that Amy provided. This is to minimize any digestive upset that can occur when you switch all at once. Doodles are wonderful dogs. Congratulations!

Do you know what food he is currently being fed? Is he in foster care, or in a shelter?

Congratulations on getting a GD! they truly are a wonder breed! For the first few weeks I would keep him on what ever he comes with until he gets used to you and his new life. My GD was a re-home situation as well. I had Lillie on every kibble out there and none of them agreed with her. She would get sick have rashes or just not eat at all.Taste of the Wild and Fromm seem to be the kibble that most people are using and having good luck with. What color is your GD?

If the dog is not having any digestive issues on the current kibble, there is no reason to do all that and introduce homecooked food just to transition to a different kibble.

(BTW, most microwaves have a baked potato setting; if not just microwave the sweet potato on high for about 7 minutes, the skin will peel off very easily once it's cooled.)

I would have a vet check and fecal done on any dog coming out of a shelter or boarding environment.

Expect some diarrhes at first; Walmart food is absolute garbage, and anything we recommend is going to be a huge change.

I'd go with Fromm's Chicken a la Veg if it is available in your area. It's not sold at Petsmart or PetCo, or the other big box stores. It's hard for me to make a specific food recommendation without knowing what is available in your area, but be sure to use one of the brands on our Recommended List, and I would go with a chicken based formula.

First of all, congratulations on getting your doodle. I look forward to seeing pictures.  Please let me know when you post some.  Our rescue was on a decent food at his shelter, we kept him on it but transitioned him to a better one that our other dogs were on. We did have a vet check and he was healthy.

However, he still had 'pudding poop' for quite a while.  I think it was due to the stress of being in a shelter and adjusting to a new home, etc.
