One of my two toy poodles is throwing up, what looks like just veggies, every night for the last three nights... This little guy has always had a sensitive tummy.
I'm thinking of making him just chicken and rice for a few days. What are your thoughts? Ever had to deal with this with your pups?
Remington threw up for months straight every night at 4 in the morning. Later we found out it was probably food related. I would suggest switching foods? However, if you don't want to switch we started feeding him later in the evening and putting some yogurt on top of his food. This seemed to help quite a bit :)
I would drop back to just chicken and rice and see if that stops the upset. Veggies are hard for dogs to digest. How do you chop them? Do you cook them? I find Gracie does well if I run her veggies thru the food processor till grated, not pureed. The small pieces digest more fully. Also, I always cook them lightly to "start" the digestion process.
The chicken and rice diet usually helps with diarrhea, but not always with vomiting...if the stomach can't handle food, it can't handle food. Tammy's right, vegetables are much harder to digest, especially raw veggies, so I would definitely eliminate those for a few days and see if that helps. Cut the chicken up very very fine, or use ground chicken, that may help. But I would see the vet if this continues, there's a danger of dehydration.
How old is your poodle, and have there been any major diet changes in the last week?
No big changes in his diet in the last week. He's been eating homecooking for close to a month now... The vomiting only started this past weekend. KC is 10 years old.
I don't know for sure, but this might be something the canned pumpkin might help.
And I would definitely have a very bland diet...the chicken & rice for the next several days.
I hope he feels better!
The pumpkin probably won't help. It helps regulate the bowels because of the fiber, so it helps with diarrhea. But for vomiting, the food isn't getting digested.
Not to scare you, does not sound like an emergency, but at his age I would take him to the vet for a chackup. Could be some aging thing going on....Has he had a checkup recently? Anything happen this past weekend like beautiful weather, more time outside, more chances to eat something in the yard?
Yes, yes, yes. Take him to vet - at age 10, it is always better safe than sorry. And I am not trying to make you panic either. The vet checkup would probably be worth every penny if it gives you a calmer mind.
I'm going to see if I can get him looked at today. I don't like the vet we have here in town, but he'll be ok in an emergency, I hope...
KC had a check up in November and everything was good... and with his history of sensitive tummy, I'm not too worried that it's something serious... but better safe than sorry.
