Hi food experts. I'm sure many of you know that Orijen freeze dried treats have been out for a while now. We've tried them, and they are outstanding. I was just looking at their website, however, and it looks like they also have actual freeze-dried food???
Here's the link:

Very exciting. Has anyone seen this in stores or tried it???

Thinking it through, though, of course Orijen is going to cost the most. That's their business model and it works. Plus you have to factor in transportation costs, exchange rates and everything else.
Karen, I say we get some liquid nitrogen and start making our own freeze-dried dog food. Stella and Chewy is really the only one in the that space, and in any case is already the lowest priced freeze dried and therefore has no incentive to charge any less than they do now.
If we could charge even 75% of what they do we'd have it made.
I just got an email from doggiefood.com. They sell Sojos freeze dried food to which you do add water. I know nothing about it but it is $16.49 for two pounds of freeze dried food and you do add water. Doggiefood is having a 17% sale right now, offers free shipping over $49 and they always have sales. They are extremely reliable, I use them for Acana all the time. I'm just wondering if the price you got for the Orijen was erroneous.
The Sojos is dehydrated and is basically a powder. It has to be reconstituted for 30 minutes before it can be used. And their least expensive basic formula is just a base, you have to add your own meat, chicken, or whatever protein source you choose. Completely different form of food. The Orijen is ready to eat from the bag. Depending on which formula you choose, one pound of Sojo's makes 4-6 pounds of food.
No, this one is different I think. It does make four pounds of food from one pound but it is labeled "complete Dog Food". The second ingredient is beef and the picture makes it look kibble like.

I think Sojos is more or less like Honest Kitchen or Grandma Lucy, no?? They have it across the street as well - I can check the price next time I'm over there.
Ugh.
I don't know about the Sojo's, but the HK formulas smell pretty good, a lot like dry vegetable soup mix.
They smell good and taste good. Personally I couldn't digest HK very well. I don't have a problem with Orijen kibble or any of the commercial raw foods. For whatever that is worth (obviously I'm not a dog).
Yes, Sojo's is very much like Honest Kitchen. The HK does not take as long to prepare.
Do you have any experience with Grandma Lucy's? We've been feeding our 15 week old pup Grandma Lucy's since we got him but we've been pondering if it is the right choice.
We were feeding it for a while. Both the complete one and the one where you add your own meet. Seems like a good product to me. Also seems tastier than HK. I'm not sure if Grandma Lucy is FDA approved like HK is, though. Also I'm not sure how relevant that is. I always try these before giving them to Lola. While I don't have a problem digesting most higher end kibble, raw or canned - I could not digest HK.
