Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

Well, after trying Canidae pure sea Myla & Chloe were having poop issues after a month or so. So we got a credit on it and bit the bullet (after a lot of research) and bought the 6 fish Orijen, OMD! I thought Chloe would stroke out when we got home. We fed them a tiny bit before we left for the store so they wouldn't miss their supper completely. Then when we got home with the 29lb bag and Chloe came running down the stairs and poked her nose in the crease of the bag and then stood on it and pawed at it and I said I think we need to mix the rest and give her the rest of her dinner. I guess they were right when

they said the strong smell really appeals to them! So we gave it to them and Chloe sucked it up like a vac in her slow feed bowl by the way~! She pushed the bowl against the wall and flipped it. I wish I would have had the camera out. Myla liked it just as well and kept eyeing Chloe to make sure wasn't coming near her bowl! Too funny. Everyday about an hour and half before their dinner Myla would also run back and forth looking at me and whining but now it's Chloe-everytime I moved this afternoon they both jumped up instantly and followed me. It was quite annoying but I love knowing they love the food that is good for them! Thanks to you all in the foodgroup helping us make the decision. More importantly thank you for bringing the jerky treats to our attention, they are going back to the store!

My husband talked to someone from Orijen and they told him that they are planning on rolling out treats in 2011 that have the same quality as their food. I'm so glad we went grain free. I hope it all works out ok

.

We walked around the pet store with the owner looking for better treats for them we were looking mostly for something made in usa and also that didn't have the bad ingredients or preservatives. Any ideas for a grain free or low fat treat? I have not talked my husband into antlers OR bully sticks.

I'm glad it's working for you. That's cool about the treats. We'd definitely try those.
Thanks! They seem so much "peppier"
I buy chicken strips at Trader Joe's as I keep saying. Made in US, just chicken. I usually break off pieces. I may try making my own jerky again with the dehydrator info. on the front page.
We don't have a Trader Joe's near us We will probably make some also
We have now made three batches of chicken jerky.  The Doodles love it, we froze what we thought we would not use and keep the balance in the fridge. I saw on Dr Foster and Smith some US manufactured  Jerky that was $22.00/lb plus shipping. I believe ours cost around $5.00 /lb.  More than plain breast because it takes more chicken to the pound once dehydrated.  Try making your own,  you will be pleased I am sure.
Jones Naturals use only U.S. ingredients and make a jerky-type treat that is grain free. Also Zukes, everything they make is great. True Chews are chicken jerky made in Iowa by Tyson. Plato is another company that makes reliable grain-free treats, too.
Thanks Karen, I saw the Zukes but didn't really look close at them.

Even picky, fussy JD likes them. We use the minis for training treats and the Z-filets for "just because" treats.

Jack likes the salmon minis and the venison Z-filets.

I love just because treats but I want them to be low calorie too? Am I dreaming?
The minis are 3 calories each. :)

You will never be sorry that you switched to Origen.Sadie has been on it and chicken backs since day one and never an issue.

Good news about the Origen treats. Now i give her liver treats or fruit.

My dog has been eating Orijen 6 Fish for 2.5 years.  She recently had bloody poops that lasted for weeks.  We went to the vet and she had colitis.  He told me that dogs need their food changed every 4-6 month and that allergies can develop when the dogs have no variety.  He suggested TOTW and yogurt on the food.  We switched and Sadie is better.  I never realized that using the same food for an extended time could cause food allergies.
