When Haley was a puppy his nails sort of shredded. His vet recommended Pet-Tabs Plus. For almost 8 years I have been giving them to him. I just saw this 2009 article regarding lead in Pet-Tabs:

So my questions are:

1. Does Haley really need a mineral supplement now? I feed him Acana Meadowland.
2. If he should continue getting a mineral supplement, any recommendations?

He doesn't need any vitamin or mineral supplement if he is eating Acana (or any nutritionally complete dog food).

It's doubtful that he ever needed a mineral supplement.

If you want to give him something for dry brittle nails, fatty acids are your best choice anyway, in particular GLA, which is the main fatty acid in evening primrose oil. Try giving a 500 mg human soft-gel once a day. Puritan's Pride usually has great prices and free shipping.

Thank you Karen. I thought that. He does get EPO 500mg from Puritan's.
I will have to get him a similar sized tasty treat. He got the PT when I get my second cup of coffee in the morning. Even if Haley is upstairs he comes running for a PT. lol

Good idea, I'm sure there are lots of similarly sized treats that he'd like just as much. :)

Whoa!  I don't think I would continue to give him these.  They sound super dangerous.  Perhaps you could just give him his high quality kibble for a while and watch his nails for damage.
