Question about losing weight

Max needs to lose about 5lbs and I'm wondering what is a safe weight loss rate for dogs.
He has been on Solid Gold Holistic Blendz since Dec 2014. He has to be on a low fat diet but has gained weight while on this food. The good news he hasn't had any gastro problems. We have cut back quantity and added green beans. His treats are dried sweet potato chips.
Just curious how long it will take. I might add he isn't getting much exercise since the weather is so hot.

I can't really help with the food intake (and Karen really covered this, I'd say), but I wanted to add that if your pup will play fetch with you...we use that a lot in our house on bad weather days. Our pup gets stir crazy pretty fast, so fetch has been a lifesaver for us. We also play "hide n seek" and hide around the house. This has our pup running around looking for us to get his treats. Just a thought! Good luck!

Laura, great idea for extra exercise! Thank you. We do play some inside but not enough, we can do more and he will love it!

We also play indoor fetch. I use soft stuffed squeaky balls to prevent breakage and marks on the walls, lol. If you have stairs, you can also just toss the ball up or down the stairs and let the pup chase it; great for extra calorie burning.

I wish we did have stairs, Max would love it. But we have a combo kitchen/dining/living room which is plenty of room for him to run and he loves to slide on the tile floor LOL! We just need to do more of this while the weather is so hot. Thanks for all the suggestions.

I don't have stairs either, but I have a long hallway. In addition to the soft balls for indoor fetch, we also have a large rope ball, about the size of a softball, that I roll down the hallway for JD to chase. One of his favorite games, "Bowling for Doodles", lol. Your tile floors would be perfect!
