I was wondering if anyone had heard of or given their doodle one of these as a chew/treat - Himalayan Corporation Ruff Roots Stump - found on Amazon. Katie does love a stick, but mean mom won't let her chew them up/drag them all over the house/eat them. She likes bullies and the himalayan yak chews, but I swear she loves nothing more than a stick. Possibly because I always take them away! I obviously don't want to give her anything that's bad for her or dangerous, so I am wondering if anyone has tried it?

Thanks! Stacy

Karen - Katie has an antler that she chews on every once in a while but isn't absolutely in love with. I haven't tried real beef bones. Do you go get them from the butcher and give them raw?? That might be more than I can do, even for Katie. I'm really weird about raw meat and bones. I pretend really hard that bully sticks aren't bully sticks.

With the big weight bearing beef bones, like beef femurs, you don't have to give them raw. You can cook them forever and they won't splinter or get soft. In fact, after your dog's had them for awhile, you can run them through the dishwasher, lol. You can stuff them, too. Here's a great discussion that F posted awhile back, with instructions and pictures: http://www.doodlekisses.com/forum/topics/marrow-bones-with-pictures...

I hope this silly girl knows how much I love her. I would not do that for any other creature in the world. I even let her kiss me after I caught her licking a mole.

Just be sure the bones are several inches long. We like 4+ inches. Yogi got a shorter one stuck on the lower part of his mouth once. It was wedged behind his canine teeth. Scary.

We do like to get the femurs and boil them like Karen said. Also the antlers have been a good choice too.
Have you tried the Petstages dogwood wooden stick? Spike LOVES it. It looks like a stick. Smells like a stick and tastes like one. But it's not! It doesn't break apart and is totally safe. Spikes a mini doodle and we buy the large size. More fun to play with:)

If you do want to get one to try make sure the actual stick has an s in petstages written on it. There are knock offs of all petstages things that look authentic but are actually made in China. Identical packaging and everything. The only difference is the s on the actual products.

I have found the knock offs in our tsc stores and at some smaller pet stores.

It's a fantastic purchase but just make sure it's the real one :)

I think I saw that one on chewy.com and I think I read something in one of the reviews that scared me away from it. Of course now I can't remember what it was that I read. It's probably fine - dogs eat all sorts of disgusting things that don't seem to hurt them. I'm just a bit of a worrier sometimes.

I can totally see people giving bad reviews if they were getting the knock offs without knowing it. I saw them in the tsc store and they were significantly cheaper than my pet store. $9.99 vs $20 for the large size. This was why. Spike demolished the fake one in 48 hours. He got sick. He's okay. But he got sick. I got pissed and took my knock off to our normal pet store to see if they have had any problems and that's when they showed me the difference.
The one spike has now he has had since the beginning of July. It is noticeable smaller. But that's from being chewed down. Not from ingestion.
Like any chew toy if and when it does show extreme wear it will be replaced. It is by far my most valuable outdoor toy. He only gets it outdoors so he always looks forward to it. I keep a spare on hand at all times. If I had to choose three of Spikes toys to grab in an emergency it would be 1) the stick, 2) the Galileo made by nylabone and 3) the nylabone dinosaur

Here's the Nylabone that JD (80 lbs, powerful chewer) gets; it comes in several "flavors". Totally safe and the only chew recommended by his internal medicine specialist: http://www.chewy.com/dog/nylabone-durachew-peanut-butter/dp/108523?...

Yes! We have that guy, but without the texture. I think we're gonna be buying only these toys for a long time with our advanced chewer.

We have the big Petstages one too and that has lasted our pup forever and a day.

A few others that are not antlers (which our pup is obsessed with) are Nylabones that look like these:

Our puppy is a dynamite chewer and we've had these for months.

Other fun and indestructible toys are some heavy duty balls for treats (see below):

Ragley loves Benebones, similar to Nylabone but I believe made with a higher grade nylon
