Hi Karen...our new puppy NellieDoodle who will be coming home July 6 is going to be eating Life's Abundance Organic Grain Free All Stages.  I see it is not mentioned at all on the food list.  Do you know anything about it?  I know we have to keep her on it for two weeks after coming home and then slowly ween her to another food if we need to change foods.  Thanks for any info you might have...Nancie

We've had several discussions here about Life's Abundance. It is sold only through a multilevel marketing program, (MLM) otherwise known as a pyramid scheme. The breeders get commissions when you buy it, using their login number. It's a mediocre quality chicken and grain food with a big price tag, (because of all the levels of commissions) and the company is very secretive about their manufacturing and sourcing of ingredients. You also can't buy it in stores. For these reasons we don't recommend it. Be sure that you don't sign up for their "auto ship" program, it's almost impossible to cancel it. Buy only what you will need for a month at most. If her stool is good after 2 weeks, you can switch her to something else.

Karen - I just discovered that Amazon has their own brand of food called Wag. It comes in Turkey, Beef, Salmon, and Lamb all with Lentils. I'm not thinking about changing foods, but I was curious to know if it's any good, or if it seems like it would be a safe product.

That would depend on who is manufacturing it, where they are making it, and where the ingredients come from. Chances are that it's going to be hard for me to get that info from a company the size of Amazon, lol. I can look at the nutritional info though.

So I looked at the Salmon formula and I'm not real impressed. You usually want to see tomato pomace rather than beet pulp as the main fiber source. And how a salmon based formula has an Omega 6:3 ratio of slightly more than 6 to 1 is a mystery to me. I'm guessing that the bulk of the food is made up of plant proteins. The macronutrient profile looks good, but I'm fairly sure that 35% protein content is not complete protein, i.e. from animal sources, and containing all essential amino acids. And it's fairly low in calories (346/cup) which means you have to feed more.

Interesting. I'm a fan of Amazon in general, I just thought it was interesting and slightly odd that they would branch out into dog food as well as everything else.

I'm a fan of Lexus, lol, but I wouldn't buy dog food from them. :)
In general, the bigger the company, the worse the quality...at least when it comes to food.

I had a feeling that might be the case - like mass produced grocery store dog food. But then I saw the 35% protein and I thought perhaps I was mistaken. Amazon could have made the Tesla of dog food and we would all be missing out! But instead just another meh dog food.

Hi Karen,  My little 14 week old Nellie may be having a problem with foods with chicken.  She is scratching all the time and doesn't have a flea, hot spot, rash, bite or flake on her body.  She also "corn cobs" her legs!!  I have had her on Orijen grain free puppy which she loves but it is chicken based.  Everything else about her is perfect...poops too!  So I want to take the chicken out of the equation and see if anything changes.  I am looking for a large breed puppy grain free.  What do you know about Nulo Freestyle Grain Free Puppy ? It is Turkey and sweet potato.  Thanks

Nancie, I can promise you that it's not chicken, or any other kind of food that is causing the problem. She's simply too young to have developed any kind of food allergy or sensitivity. 
The Nulo food looks okay but I would need to check sourcing in order to recommend it. However, the Omega 6:3 ratio is much higher than Orijen's, so I wouldn't be surprised if it made the itching worse. 
Puppies are itchy. Try bathing her with Douxo Calm shampoo and see if that helps.

Thanks Karen for the information.  We are having unusually horrible weather here with heat and humidity and everyone and everything seems to be itching.  I was just getting concerned because she gets so distracted but when she is sleeping she doesn't itch once for hours!!!  I'm glad to hear that it is not the food.  She loves what she is eating and is so healthy and happy.  I really don't want to change a thing.  I love that little Jasper now jumps in the car!  Nellie sleeps in bed with us and I love it!  Though we have to lift her up and off.  She is the best snuggle bug ever!!!!  Hugs
