Safe Chew Treats at Petsmart

Jackdoodle and I have been practicing for the CGC at our local Petsmart, which has also given me a chance to check out their treat section. (Good aisle for practicing with distractions, lol...he can smell those bones and things through the wrappers.)

I was very happy to see that Petsmart is carrying True Chews, which is a brand of dog treats made in Iowa by the Tyson company. I was aware that they made chicken jerky, but I did not know that they also sell bully sticks and other bully treats of various shapes and sizes- "Bully Pretzels" would have been a winner with my poodle, but they're too small, (and possibly too complicated) for JD - as well as pig ears, and other chewables.

All True Chews products are made in the USA from American ingredients.

I also found products made by a company called Dentley's. Here the news is not as good. They sell beef tracheas, which is one of JD's favorite and most long lasting chew treats, two to a package for a good price. These are labeled Product of USA. (I had to get a clerk to verify that for me, as the print is teeny-tiny.)

However, when I looked at a package of braided bully sticks (another favorite, and the braided ones last longer) I saw that those said Product of India. (Aren't bulls sacred in India?) Another Dentley's product I checked, I forget which one, said Product of China.

I did buy the tracheas, JD had one two nights ago, and they seem fine. But read those labels carefully!

Never assume that just because one product sold by a company is made in North America, all of their products are.

Check those labels!

Good to know I can get safe treats at Petsmart and don't always have to travel to the next town to the specialty pet store.

We just went to Petsmart to pick up Luna's first bag of Wellness (Here's hoping she likes it... super5mix whitefish/sweet potato), so I cruised by the treat aisle and got her some of those Dentleys beef tracheas. 

 

I noticed they also have antlers now - didn't check on their source though since they were very expensive ($15 for a 6" long antler seemed steep to me!)

Thanks for sharing this info. We quickly found out that all the products of the same company on the same shelf were NOT all made in the same place! We searched for awhile and didn't come across true chews jerky and my DH is against all the other stuff. We will take a look, have to get these doodles out of the house this weekend!

Last weekend I went to Pet Supermarket instead of PetSmart (I had coupons) and found beef tracheas from a company called Jones Natural Chews--100% made in the USA. I also got some US-made lamb lungs from Merrick.

Jones Natural Chews is one of my absolute favorite companies; everything they make is from the USA and they are a very reliable company. JD loves the beef liver chews.
