We currently feed California Natural Lamb and Rice.  We all know what has been going on with this product.

To be prepared we successfully switched over to Fromm's Salmon formula and Spud tolerated it very well although I stopped purchasing Salmon because Starlit really really really Stinks.  No big deal. she is a dog, but she is a constant kisser and a huger.

Here is the problem:

Spud has a terrible time switching foods, has a sensitive stomach ( throws it back up ) , and
digestion becomes a runny disaster making him miserable.   Starlit stinks ( the least of my worries ).

If I have to I will just tolerate her really bad odor to save Spud weeks of misery, but I would like to try something else without making poor Spud miserable.

  • Any recommendations for those dogs who have successfully switched to Fromm;s, who have a sensitive stomach, but do not use the Salmon formula.
  • Another food might be an option but Fromm's is carried in our feed store.

Thanks Spud, Starlit, and Joanne

I think I would try the chicken one. Peri does not have a sensitive stomach, so I really can't tell you for sure. HOWEVER, my chihuahua sure does and he always does better on a food with chicken OR fish. Give the chicken a try. I might be crazy - never noticed the salmon smelling so bad or making breath bad. It is not Peri's favorite protein though, so I stick with rotating between pork, duck or chicken.
I used Fromm's chicken a la veg and duck and sweet potato I think. I think I used the salmon once but the dogs didn't love it. only switched from Fromm's to Solid Gold because Petco, which is nearer to me, carries it along with some other good foods now but not Fromm's. A couple of months of stinky gas and all was fine. No real sensitive stomachs here but sometimes poops get softer than I deem good for cleanup. I think it's when they get too mny treats . I've gotten rid of all but Zuke's and Trader Joe's dried chicken, with a rare pig ear strip but of course sometimes, like just before, they get a little human food like egg or meat.
I notice very SOFT poops with Frooms and this is the sole reason I never completely went to Frooms.
Joanne, have you considered grain-free? It has really worked well for some dogs who always had soft poop.
Wow, no, never thought of grain-free feeding. Means I have some reading to do. I'm sure I can find it here in the food groups.

I've become so set in my ways since CFN worked, I never looked into anything else or thought of changing until the buy-out of the dog food company. This is something to seriously consider since I am reluctant as heck to try Fromms again.

Any brand pop into your head that may match our problem?

p.s. Starlit is a true lab.... she would eat the box and be just fine if I let her :) so I am not worried about her at all except she would like to eat humans
Joanne...Jane got me switched over to Acana for Gracie Doodle. It is grain free and the poops are gorgeous!!! (If a poop can be gorgeous). We couldn't be happier with the product! And there are (I think) three choices.
Yep, Acana would be my first choice, too, or Orijen Adult formula.
Nancie, Poop can be gorgeous to me..... :)

Can you picture us all as we walk around our yards? Look at all the owners expressions. Can you see them? The frown poop, the GREAT poop, the relief poop, the stare intensely at the " identify what is in the poop, poop.

Ok.... I'll take this to the poop group. Maybe we can have poop emoticons added just for the discussion.

I'm on the hunt for an Arcana merchant tomorrow :) THANK YOU
Wonderful..... Thank you.
The closest store is 50 miles from me. I'll ask my retailer if they will order some.

Odd, Orejen ( same company ) is sold at a few locations near us.
Joanne-
I had trouble getting Acana locally too, so I ordered it online. Even with the shipping it wasn't anymore expensive than the one retail store in our area that sells it (although they always seem to be out of it). If you have trouble getting it, let me know and I'll send you the link to the website I used.
Sure Jane, send me the website. The main site says I can only get it at a local retailer. The company does not sell direct.
The site I used was http://wwwdoggiefood.com. The 5.5lb bag of the Acana Wild Priarie was $11.99, the 16.5lb bag was $35.99, and the 29.7lb bag was $49.99. The turnaround was very fast....I got my order in a few days.
