Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

Hi all,
I tried searching through previous messages but it was hard to really sort out people's preferences and opinions. Whopper has only been on Organix Puppy as that is what the breeder started her on and we figured we'd stick with it for a while. Whopper will still eat it but since being spayed last week, she has started being a little stubborn when it comes to her food and the vet recommended now would be a good time to change it. I've narrowed it down based on the online site that rates dog foods to Solid Gold Hundchen Flocken Puppy and the Wellness Super 5 Mix. Anyone have any insight as to which one I should try?

Well, the Solid Gold is considered by many knowledgable people to be the best quality kibble you can buy. The company is also among the most ethical companies around. The Wellness Super 5 mix is a very good food, too. Do a search in the "Forums" section (click the word Forum above) for "Solid Gold" or "Wellness" and you will get all the links to the various discussions here on DK about these.
I would love to feed Jack Solid Gold, but they do not have a formula that works for us, due to some of his medical problems. (He needs rice) I would try that one first, but both are good.
Thanks for the response. I think financially Solid Gold is also a little less expensive than Wellness too which is always appreciated. It turns out what we were feeding Whopper was a smaller bag than you can get these 2 in and so in actuality it was more expensive than both. After researching Organix again I really didn't like the amount of soy and so that's a major factor in the switch even though she's never had any issues healthwise.
I'm surprised the SG is less expensive...where I shop, it's the other way around. SG does have 5 lb bags available, they carry them at Pet Supplies Plus in my area.
Soy is a lousy ingredient for dogs. It enables the company to put a higher protein content on the label, but much of it can't be utilized by dogs. It is also one of the worst culprits in food allergies. I agree with your decision to switch.
Based on the size of the bags, the largest size bag has 33 lbs vs 30 lbs in the Wellness and the Wellness is $2 dollars more. Not a big difference and they definitely are not cheap but I figure now is the most important time to make sure she's getting high quality food. Everything is developing and I don't want her to be shortchanged. If the cost becomes too much than obviously we'll look to switch again to something less expensive when she ventures into adult food.
Thanks for the tip. I'm heading to Petco after work to see what my options are but figured I'd probably start with a small bag. I just always compare based on the largest size available because eventually I plan to buy that. The smaller bags aren't as cost effective it seems.
Funny, I tried the Wellness Super 5 Mix, my LD loved it, no problem, my GD with his IBS had loose stools, so I tried Solid Gold Hundchen Flocken Puppy and thy both are doing fine. I though the Solid Gold was more expensive $53 for the largest bag, where Wellness was $49 for the largest bag. I also add veggies or can or those packaged food with veggies and some meat and gravy. My GD with IBS won't eat just dry. The LD eats anything and everything.
I just thought I'd let everyone know that we've started the transition to Solid Gold Hundchen Flocken Puppy. So far we have had no issues with it and it's actually pretty funny..Whopper now eats the little bit of Solid Gold out of her food mix and then we have to convince her that her old food is worth eating too at this point. Right now we are only giving her about a 1/4 cup of Solid Gold but plan to increase that gradually over the next week or two so that we can hopefully finish off our old food too.
