Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum
Our 2 year old Australian Labradoodle has started to turn his nose up at the Wellness CORE Original formula after feeding it to him for about 1 year. We are thinking about switching him to FROMM. Have any of you switched from Wellness to FROMM with good results and do you rotate the flavors withing the brand of food you are using?

We found with our guys (4 dachshunds, 1 heritage unknown) that of the 5 dogs - 2 get bored with food and want a change. In preparation for getting our little doodle in two weeks, I've spent more time investigating other foods and made the decision to switch to FROMM. I gradually made that switch and they have been solely on the new food about 3 weeks. Everyone was ecstatic! They love it. We decided to go with two different flavors - and we feed one in the morning and one at night. That seems to alleviate the problems and even the ones that get bored with the same foods are eager eaters. I decided that I will probably add another flavor and rotate it in about every two months or so. They have so many flavors in their line that I think we can keep it interesting.
Bailey is 8 months old and we just switched from Natural Balance to Orijin with excellent results. He is picky as well, but seems to like Orijin.
CORE is grain-free and has a 34% protein content. If your doodle is doing well on it, I would stay with a similar food. We hear about so many digestive issues in these dogs, when you have one whose digestion is fine, I wouldn't mess with it, lol. When switching foods, you need to look at the particular formula and not just a brand. The Fromm Four-Star line has five grain-free formulas. Their protein levels are slightly less than CORE. The other Fromm formulas which do contain grains are lower yet. If you do switch, be sure to stay with the grain-free formulas.
Thanks for all the information. He does well on the Wellness CORE; however, he just seems not as excited lately to eat it and at times just wont. I have even brought an opened bag back and replaced it with one with a different expiration date thinking maybe it was just that bag of food. Doesn't seem to matter. At times he dives right in and other times just smells it and walks away. For the longest time he would eat right away and within the last month occasionally he just doesn't seemed as interested in this food. I am a big believer in not messing with his food if his digestive system is doing well, which it is, however; I also want to ensure he is getting enough calories throughout the day since he is active. They are smart dogs so I am watching him closely to see if he is "playing" me and holding out for something better like the treats we use for training and that's why I haven't rushed to switch his foods.
You might try a bag of the CORE Ocean formula. Maybe you can get a sample from the company. If he likes it, you can rotate between the two.
You are very wise not to rush into changing his food because he doesn't seem to "like" it any more. We've had many discussions about this here, but the bottom line is that there are some people who have changed foods several times trying to find something the dog "likes", and eventually the dog doesn't "like" anything, lol.
At 2 years old, he's finished growing and that may have something to do with the change in his appetite. While their skeletal growth is usually complete by 1 year old, they continue to gain muscle mass well into their second year. But by their 2nd birthday, that's done as well. So even though they are just as active, they may not be quite as hungry as they were when they were still gaining lean mass.
I do think keeping an eye on him is a good idea.
Update since my initial post: I realized due to increased training that Jasper was getting too many calories (vital pet fresh food for treats) and it wasn't that he was being picky, he just wasn't hungry. So happy I didn't jump to switching his food and took time to analyze what I was doing different since he started not eating his kibble as easily as he typically would. I have adjusted his kibble to account for the Vital Pet Fresh that we give him during our training sessions and I am happy to report that he is eating each and every kibble I put in his Kong wobbler morning and night!
Thanks to all of you for your feedback!
Glad you figured it out!
