Stuart has had diarrhea for 2 days, usually if things get soft or runny a little bit of extra Primal in with the Orijen puppy will firm things back up.  Not this time.  This afternoon after having water type poo again - we ran a poo sample to the vet as I wanted to make sure that he did not have a relapse of Giardia.  Came back clean and they put him on Endosorb and Metronidazole.  The vet told dh that she wishes we would stop feeding the raw food.  So I cooked white rice in veggie broth for his dinner which he turned his nose up to till I added his primal to it and then down it went.

Why does the vet think the raw is so bad.  How do I defend my decision to feed the raw.  What do I tell the vet?

Oh and the cat escaped from the lanai due to a door left ajar.  We never knew he was gone but we think something might have attacked him.  He yells and bites if you pick him up - (beeping) great.  I'm having a glass of wine VERY early.

Pick up a copy of Marion Nestle's Feed Your Pet Right, or better yet, download it to one of those devices you can read books on. What you want is Chapter 24: Do Pet Food Companies Influence Veterinarians? In this little chapter, you will learn that veterinary schools have no required nutrition curriculum and the optional courses the vet students can elect to take are offered by Hill's Science Diet and Purina. In other words, your vet knows less about pet nutrition than you do.

I would turn the question around on the vet and ask what you asked here: Why do you think this food is so bad?

You really don't have to defend your decisions, but if you feel you have to, tell him/her that you have done your own fact-based research and chosen the products that you feel are safest and most nutritious for your dogs. Tell him your might change your mind if he can provide you with some independent (i.e. not published by Hills or Purina) literature explaining why your choices are not good ones.

Then bet your DH something major, like a new piece of jewelry, that the vet won't be able to do it. Sure bet, kiddo.

Thanks Karen!!!  Maybe I can find a way to just print this off and give to her.  LOL

Karen, is this the chapter you're talking about?

Many thanks for posting this which I have now saved, read, learnt from and hope never to have to quote to any vet.

Tina, I haven't been able to open that document, but I'm sure it is.

Yes it is.  I have just read it and it is as you describe.

Karen...the reason you can't open it is because it is a Microsoft Word 2007 document.  When you see the "x" after doc that is what it means.  If it were saved in the MS Word 2003 then you would not have a problem and you would just see the "doc" extension.

Tina...you can save in just 2007 or there is an option to save in 2003/2007 compatible.  I was able to open it on my MacBook Pro with Firefox.

Oh I hate the problems with MS2007.  I just converted the file to a pdf.  Let me see if Karen can view the file now.  If not, I'll try to convert the file if you would like.
here is the pdf file

Thanks Joanne, but I only got one page.

We do have a discussion here somewhere in TFG with some of the chapter, it has 4 pages missing.

Okay. I have to run out for a few.  Let me know. If you do not have it by the time I get back I will download the conversion and convert the file.

I have A LOT of experiance with the 2003/2007 nightmare problems so I know what to do. Let me know.

Her file is only 4 pages long.

You can also download a simple conversion from MS WORD that will allow you to " View only" the 2007 file.
