Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

So we recently adopted a doodle from DRC and I have noticed that he poops way faster and a lot more suddenly than our other doodle.  Our first guy, Cubbie, will sniff around, squat, and then just squat there for a little bit (I compare him to a guy just relaxing on the toilet with a Sports Illustrated magazine) before anything comes out.  Our new doodle, Ollie, will sniff and sniff and then all of a sudden just poop.  It is like he waits until the very last minute before he squats.  Now that really isn't the issue though.  Cubbie NEVER poops when we are out on a walk.  He really prefers to go in the comfort of his own backyard.  Ollie seems to prefer going in public and will literally go in the middle of walking.  Today we went to take them for a walk and sent them out back to take care of business before we left.  Cubbie did his thing but Ollie just came right back to the door.  I assumed that he just didn't have to go.  Nope...He just didn't WANT to go.  We didn't even make it to the end of our block (about 10 houses down) before he decided he wanted to go.  He will seriously just squat in the middle of the sidewalk.  I was able to quickly pull him over to the grass (he pooped on someone's driveway the other day and I learned my lesson!!  It is not easy to pick up slightly soft doggie-do from concrete!)

Which one of my dogs is the unusual one?  Cubbie who only likes to go at home (which I really do prefer) or Ollie he who poops on the move?  I really would like to figure out a way to encourage him to go at home.  I am even thinking about trying to walk him down a few houses and then come back to try and make him use our yard before we take our "official" walk.  Nothing spoils a good walk like having to scoop up poop and carry it around for 45 minutes!

Does this happen to anyone else?

Jackdoodle has been this way from day one. He will only poop on leash, on a walk. I can bring him to a dog park, someone else's yard, whatever, and he will not poop no matter how long we're there. But on the way back to the car, on leash, he might. He poops twice a day, during our morning and evening walks, and never in the backyard.

In the winter, when the sidewalks are icy, the temp is below zero, or the snow is two feet deep, we don't take evening walks. (I cannot afford to break a hip, even for JD.) It usually take about two days for him to finally poop in the yard. So when that's their only choice, eventually they manage.

I chalk this up to whatever happened to him with his previous owners. Maybe he didn't have a yard and always had to poop on leash walks. Maybe he was afraid to poop in the yard because harsh housebreaking methods were used and he's afraid that the yard is too close to the house and he'll get in trouble. I know many dogs try to get as far away from the house as they can to do their business, but it's usually a far corner of the yard, not another street, lol.

wonderful (sarcasm).  I had hoped this was just a phase that we had to get past.  I think I am going to invent a very small foldable pooper scooper that you can take on walks!!  There is nothing enjoyable about picking up fresh poop with only a bag between your hand and the mess!!
Don't give up that hope. You have a tool that I don't have...you have another dog. Maybe with time and a good example to follow, Ollie will switch over to Cubbie's toilet habits.
