Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

Hi everyone. I am a new doodle owner and I need help figuring out the best way to teach Ginger not to jump on me or anyone else. She is 5 months old and just gets super excited when she first sees me when I get home from work, even at this age she practically knocks me down. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

A couple things ...

1) Calmly enter the house and go about your business for a few minutes while completely ignoring pup.

2) When pup appears calm(ish?) turn your attention to pup and have your pup sit or lay down - give treats and praise and calmly greet pup.

3) Continue consistently - you should see an adjustment in a few weeks. Make sure that you ignore pup until they are calm (based on your standards of calm) before you give attention.

----- I know it's hard to ignore your pup when you come home, but they will learn that when you come home is a calm moment.

In terms of other people -- we still have our pup on a leash for the first few minutes of any time a visitor comes in our house and we move him far into the room while we greet the visitor (this obviously takes two people). It takes him only a few minutes and then he is calm. This used to take much longer, but as he gets older it's only a minute or two and he's completely calm and the leash is off. No one is allowed to greet him until he's calm (this is the hardest thing because people always want to play with our pups, but that reinforces the jumping/excited behavior).
