I would like to ask those of you that had puppies with dark red fur, and have groomed/cut your doodle's fur, is the dark then gone?  We have never cut Izzy's hair.  I know she really needs it but I really don't want to lose her dark red coat.  Underneath it is much lighter.  I really think once it is cut she'll be lighter.  Please let me know what you've experienced.  Thanks!

Izzy is certainly a lovely color so I see why you hesitate grooming...but doesn't she get matts? My Ruby, who is 5 years old now, was VERY red when born. She definitely lightened with grooming but also age. I read that it's the "Poodle" genes in them that cause the fur/hair to lighten. All the Doodles I've seen lighten (so do Poodles, I think.) She's now an apricot color with darker red on her ears. People always remark on her color, though, they love it. I also notice that her nose lightens in the winter...another typical dog trait.

I think that our dog Lucky is From the same litter as he is 16 months as well and looked just like her until two weeks ago when he was groomed. He was very red and is much lighter now. I am glad we did it given the spring and all of the stuff that he was bringing in the house. I will try to send before and after pics as he really looks different but I am sure it will grow back.

Good luck!

The color of Chance's coat didn't change that much.  He is still very red.  But we did first groom him when he was five or six months old so his coat could have changed slowly after time that we never saw a drastic change.  I know Chance's baby coat was different than his adult coat...his waviness was a little more tighter and the texture of his hair was different on his adult coat.  He still has a handsome dark color though.  Please post Izzy after her day at the Salon!!

Gunner got his first haircut when he was 6 months old.  He probably did lighten up some, but not enough for me to notice. The only place that I can tell is getting lighter is his face, but that seems to be a golden retriever characteristic.  As a baby, his coat was wavy and now he has lots of curls in various places.   If we don't get his haircut every 3 months or so, he does get very matted; however, brushing him quite often helps too.  I think Gunner's coat is still very red, but he is almost 18 months so we'll see what happens over time.  People always comment on how they like his red coat.
