Welcome to the Educators with Doodles group. We need some new energy in this group, so hop right in. You will all get used to the new schedule. These dogs are very adaptable.
Hi Cathy, I just saw the comment you sent me. So sorry, I don;t check my page very often. Thanks for your kind comment about Finney. Your Finnegan is adorable too. We started with puppy classes and then Canine Good Citizen training. I researched the various therapy organizations and chose Bright and Beautiful Therapy Dogs. We tested through that organization and Finn got his certification but there are others that are national. Therapy Dog iInternational and Pet Partners come to mind. Then we joined a local therapy dog organization that already had a reading program in place. To go into the hospital, I had to get B&B in touch with the hospital volunteer office so that B&B could add the hospital to their list of insured facilities. Others here have started in libraries or in nursing homes. Some places will let you in with a well behaved pup if you explain you want to socialize the pup (at least that was my experience). I took FInn in to several nursing homes. Most people love the idea of therapy dogs and you'll find that they welcome you, as long as you go in and ask first, register your dog with them, etc. It's a wonderful experience to share your dog. Good luck. WIll be anxious to hear how you guys progress. DId you join the therapy dogs group?
