The early launch times are one reason I've never gone. I once went up in a glider, that was fun.

I finally found the picture...this balloon flew thru between our backyard and backyard of our neighbors behind us (2 golf holes running parallel).

Here's the distance...by the time I thought to get my camera, it was heading off to the right.

Sept 3rd is the Balloon Club's next competition flight.  I'll have to go watch (they launch at 6:52AM)!

HE said this balloon is a Fire Fly. Just in case you wanted to know the type.

Just asked DH if he was ever at this event. He has traveled all over the country to fly.  He said, NO.  That is a first.  It is a beautiful way to spend a summer day.

Cool picture, Joanne.  They had two launches.  The first one was at 7:30 (just as we were leaving) and then one at 9 PM - was the "glow" launch.

There is a local balloon club here in Omaha.  The picture below is really bad, but there are usually 5-6 up at a time.  I have pictures SOMEWHERE of when they did a launch at Standing Bear Lake, which is a mile from here.  The balloons actually came within spitting distance of our house...they were flying really low.

Did they launch any?  Or just tether?  Up close those burners have chased away horses, cows, and I am sure make a dog go crazy.   Anyway, used to do some of this myself.   Here I am a few years ago holding on to those ropes for dear life.  Hard work.  My DH no longer flies but it was a good time.  It is hard work. But yes, those people love the WINE and other things in the Ballooning world.

I was a bit concerned Joanne about the burner sound.  Rua gets FREAKED around hydraulics (garbage trucks and ferris wheels).  She didn't mind the burners at all.   It was inflated while the crowd watched...prior to the launching of the group of them.  They 'deflated' it right after.

This was our first time going.  Really didn't understand the whole thing.  We weren't prepared like those who had been there before.  My DH doesn't like crowds and it was REALLY getting packed and we had only planned on spending a few hours.  We picked Rua up and carried her at the end.

Next year we will take chairs, a little table, a wine bucket with ice, and get there in time to grab a good spot.  We'll buy a bottle of wine and some food and he can just sit.  I can do a little exploring (they also had a small 'craft fair' there).

That's an oldie but goodie balloon.  Wonder if they just use it for tether?   How did Rua do with the sound of the burners?  Typically, you are far away from the sound as a bystander but just wondering.
